The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Originally reviewed: 11/27/12. Spent the holiday weekend down in Greenville, SC with some friends and had to go the Trappe Door for my Belgian fix. I really wanted a Quad, but alas, there were none on draft. This is one I’ve wanted to try for quite some time, but keep passing up. Not this time. This was the small 11.2oz bottle, poured into a St. Bernardus chalice. Pours a dark ruby-mahogany garnet with a small sheet of lace on top. Rich aroma of plum, grape, stawberry, alcohol, all washed in a pleasant floral scent. Carbonated well. Good heft to this makes this a great sipper. Holds up the richness of this beer quite well. The flavors mirror the aroma making this one a nice decadent treat. Fig, raisin, plum, molasses, syrup, and just a touch of booze on the finish. There’s a lot going on here, and I’m not sure this bottle was big enough for me to capture all of the nuances. I guess that’s what the 750s are for. This was a treat, and one I would gladly have again.

A massive impression of course. On tap it is a really great experience and the taste is massive and heavy. Lightly sweet but alcoholic.

Big bottle. Malt plum alcohol fruit aroma. Reddish plum color with a white head. Medium heavy body with carbonation. Plum raisin caramel gig flavor. Sweet finish without the sticky mouth feel. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Julios. Dark brown with lasting eggshell head and some lace. Woody earthy aroma with fig/raisin and tobacco. Rich medium sweet raisin plum purple grape sweetness with earthy woody tobacco bitterness that lingers with a hint of sweetness but no stickiness, no cloy. Smooth creamy medium body with very fine internal carb. Excellent...as everybody already knows.

The taste of this one is close to the taste of Westvleteren 12. If there is no change to drink a westvleteren 12 or a Rochefort 10, you can choose this one. It comes very close to these two.

Bottle. Had it a couple of times over the years and find it to be a complex, malt forward, medium bodied, medium sweet, well balanced beer. Excellent job.

J’y reviens ... Histoire de comparer mon goût d’aujourd’hui avec celui d’il y a quelques années. Et bien ma foi c’est plus léger et moins bien que dans mon souvenir, même si ça reste de bonne facture ...
