The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Originally reviewed: 11/27/12. Spent the holiday weekend down in Greenville, SC with some friends and had to go the Trappe Door for my Belgian fix. I really wanted a Quad, but alas, there were none on draft. This is one I’ve wanted to try for quite some time, but keep passing up. Not this time. This was the small 11.2oz bottle, poured into a St. Bernardus chalice. Pours a dark ruby-mahogany garnet with a small sheet of lace on top. Rich aroma of plum, grape, stawberry, alcohol, all washed in a pleasant floral scent. Carbonated well. Good heft to this makes this a great sipper. Holds up the richness of this beer quite well. The flavors mirror the aroma making this one a nice decadent treat. Fig, raisin, plum, molasses, syrup, and just a touch of booze on the finish. There’s a lot going on here, and I’m not sure this bottle was big enough for me to capture all of the nuances. I guess that’s what the 750s are for. This was a treat, and one I would gladly have again.

Deep reddish brown pour with a thin tan head. Yeast, fruit cake, malt, brown sugar, little spicy. Taste is caramel, dark fruit, a little boozy. Pretty damn good.

3/31/15 (Bottle) - Very dark brown pour, generous thick tan head. Aromas included malts, fruits, raisins and spices. Incredibly smooth to drink, light carbonation, beer went down easy despite the heavy ABV, though you did feel it later.Well balanced taste of malts, hops and flavor. Right amount of "wrong", sweet and firm. Overall an excellent beer, one of the best I ever had.

33cl BBE 22/07/18 This is a place holder. I am sick, and I can not taste beer properly. Will get back to this one. First impression is good. A bit yeasty for my taste, and rather thin though.

On tap at la maison belgue. Brown with a thick off-white head. Aroma is a yeasty, sweet malty. Flavor is a rich caramel with a maybe too high alcoholic for my taste, balanced by an earthy sweetness. Nice warmer beer, but not my fave quad.

Spoko piwo. Fajny aromat, spoko wygląd i świetny smak. Jakoś nie byłem przekonany wcześniej do tego gatunku, ale to piwo powoli to zmienia..
