The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Had this out of a bottle. It poured a murky brown and like pop. It was very effervescent with a nice head. After it has some time in the glass the effervescence goes away. It smells fruity and raisin with a little malts. The taste is similar to it’s nose but you can definitely taste the 10.5% alcohol. It’s a pretty good quadruple but not as good as the Trappist rochefort 10.

Foam: ivory-coloured head, not big, diminishing. Colour: very dark red/brown. Aroma: sweet fruits, malts, cherries… Taste: full body, lower carbonation, plums, apple, salted caramel, alcohol, toffee, yeast, figs, raisins, dark fruits, as you drink it you find a lot of more…, in finish with herbs hops notes, very nice one, great excellent beer.

This beer is super complex, so many different things going on, nice yeast character, crazy malt structure, sweetness, you name it. I love this beer, hope they re-release the special edition too.

A nice abbey appearance, the beer has a dark brown thick white layer of foam, there was a nice smell, however, the smell was not that strong. There was a nice sweet smell with a alcohol aroma. The smell also contained some bitterness. The taste also had this alcohol in it, which fits a dark traditional beer like this. The finish had a nice amount of bitterness.

From 750ml, poured into Belgian style tulip glass

Aroma: sweet malts, fruits, cherries,

Appearance: brown with red hues, hazy, big tan head with great retention

Taste: Heavy sweet, light bitter

Palate: full body, creamy, average carbonation, dry finish

Overall: Very creamy and smooth quad. Slight taste of alcohol, but it’s subtle against the complex sweetnesses. Aroma is very sweet, almost like fruit and cherries. Nice dark brown color with hazy/cloudy body and big tan head. A very solid quad with a slight bitterness that balances the heavy malty sweetness. I slightly prefer La Trappe over Abt12, but they’re both highly enjoyable.

Pours a murky brown. Earth and hay aromas. Very spicy and a touch of brown sugar to compliment.

Dull brown pour with a short, light tan head. Earthy yeast aroma. Fruit and caramel equally represented and well-blended.

2 bottles opened and tested in parallel in May 2015. one new purchased in the U.S. with a 2018 best before and one 8 years old purchased in Belgium with a 2011 best before date. The older has less head and is darker. Old has strong port and dried fruit aroma. New has minimal aroma but some similar notes. Old: plums, dried fruit, molasses. Slightly sweet and slick finish. Low carbonation. New: drier an similar notes but much less pronounced. Some more hoppy bitterness detectable but not strong. More effervescent mouthfeel. Old is significantly better and the basis of the review. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
