The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Bottle at home in London - picked up somewhere in Belgium. Aged between two to three years. Pours clear, red-brown with a staunch, beige cream head. Plenty of sugary, semi-dark malts in the nose, rich toffee, some faintly tangy fruits, dates, plums, figs. Big sweet flavor with an explosion of ripening fruits, caramel, rich bready malts, some alcohol kick, prune, fig, banana. Full bodied with lively, massaging carbonation. The finish carries a fair amount of boozy warmth, with lots of sugary, bready malts, toffee and caramel, more ripening fruits such as dates and figs, plums, berries, bruised bananas, some dark cherries. Yeah, absolutely a world-class quad. One of the most drinkable 10%+ ABV beers I’ve had in a long time.

Dark brown with a beautiful, sliky smooth head. The aroma has notes of ripe fruit, port wine and rum. The mouthfeel is oily. The flavour is sweet with notes of plum, raisin, banana, caramel, roasted malt and a weak acidity in the long finish. Even if it’s this strong, the alcohols is subdued. Nice.

UPDATED: SEP 27, 2003 Bottled. Deep amber/brown coloured. Light brown head. Might be something wrong with this bottle. Maybe excess yeast, because lots of foam burst out of the bottle. Nothing wrong with the aroma, though. Fruits, spices, malts and slightly notes of alcahol. Flavour is very fruity. Plums and raisins is present, an some vague alcahol burn. This is not as well balanced as other top-notch belgian strong ales. Has to give it another try. Rerate draught: Not much to add. Seemed a lot more balanced in the flavours, and more distinct in the aroma, why I uprate it by. Original rate 8-4-7-4-16-3,9.

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2006 RERATE 060624. I loved this beer the very first time I had it. Since then I have tried it several times on both bottle and tap. And I just like it more and more each time. Simply wonderful, I just cant get enough of it. (Old rating: 10/4/9/5/17) Dark amber, nice lasting offwhite head. Great malty aroma with hazelnuts and other nuts, along with vanilla and malt. Malty dry and nutty flavor with vanilla and cream. Very complex and with a great body. Alcohol is well hidden.
