COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2011 11.2 oz bottle, pours a deep amber brown with a thick beige head. Aroma is caramel malts, raisins, various other dried fruits and spices - very complex. Flavour is extremely complex - caramel malt, raisins, figs, slightly sweet, very alcoholic, hints of toffee. Full-bodied mouthful, with an alcoholic finish. Outstanding beer.

Blind tasting (alongside Westvleteren 12, Rochefort 8 and 10, and Chimay Blue)
Deep reddy brown, creamy beige head. Marzipan is the dominant component in the aroma, almond too, and some perfume which sweetens it. Walnut too. Soft carbonation, very velvetty palate. Maybe some alcohol showing. In the mouth, there is loads of almonds rising up retronasally, but less come through in the taste. Simple roasty graininess, and a touch of glue. With yeast, there is more roastiness, and without yeast there is more fruitiness and esters, which are beautifully heady. I think I prefer it with the yeast though, as the roast maltiness is well worth emphasising.
3.9 is good, but it came equal 4th out of the 5 (equal with Westy 12).

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a large frothy off-white head that was lasting and produced good lacing. Heavy complex fruity aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Heavy bitter sweet flavor with a long finish.

Dark brown with a medium beige head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma is rich, raisin and rum, with a hint of banana. Flavor is fruity (mostly raisin, perhaps date &/or plum), malty and quite sweet (near bubble gum), with significant alcohol presence (though it’s hard to guess it’s at 10%). Altogether a very enjoyable beer, though I’d appreciate it even more if it weren’t quite as sweet.

11.2 oz bottle poured a cloudyreddish brown with a large rocky amber head. Aromas of dark fruit, spices, brown sugar and a hint of bubblegum. Palate was full bodied and smooth. Flavors of dates, raisins, brown sugar and spices with a sweet lingering finish.

Draught at De Zolder, Brugge. Magnificent dark red brown hued with a doughy thick head. I found the draught to more flavoursome than previous bottles, there was whiskey like malt, oak, late tobacco and some banana. Luckily it wasn't carbonated and when it had warmed somewhat it gave out a delightful alcohol glow. Great beer.

Hazy dark brown color with a nice dark red glow coming through, off-white head. Nice smell and taste, like this better than Westvleteren 12. Very nice quadrupel.

Ruby red in colour with a thick light moka head. Sweet candy sugar aroma with notes of licorice, orange and alcohol. Rich spiced sweet malt, with notes of citrus, and aniseed. Nice hops in background. Rich and complex in mouth...a wonderful abt!

UPDATED: NOV 5, 2010 2006 rating: Dark ruby-brown with a big and lively off-white head. My initial impression of the aroma is champagne. That’s the closest I can come to describe that combination of earth, alcohol and fruit. The flavour is quite sweet, with a dry note of wood and licorice.

BB July 2010, bought 2006. Seems like the character has shifted to darker fruits and some walnuts. Flavour is much the same though.
