The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Today , once more I enjoyed this wonderfull beer but now from tap. Although I am not a huge fan of the darker sweet beers, this is absolutely amazing!

Strong head, dissipates after a few sips. Rich bronze color, slightly hazy. Flavor is rich with csrmel, a deep malt, and a slight alcohol finish. Quintessential Belgian quad, fantastic beer.

Aroma and tatse of fresh bread, cereals and fresh hops. I would expect a bit better but it worrth tasting. I have tasted one year before in delirium tremmens in bruxelles and I could tell that it was a lot more fascinating.

Transfer from BA review on 7-18-12 - Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass Appearance – The beer was served a brownish-red color with only a tiny white head. The head faded very fast to give only a light amount of lacing. Smell – The aroma was a nice mix of fruit, bread and yeast. There were stronger notes of dark fruit, such as prunes and plum, as well as a good yeast cake aroma. These were all balanced by a semi-sweet brown bread and biscuit aroma. Overall it was quite nice. Taste – The taste starts out with a good shot of fruit and malt. A sweet dark cherry flavor mixed with a biscuit base great the tongue. As the taste moves on other dark fruit flavors enter the tongue and are mixed with notes of a yeasty flavor as well as some candied/sugary flavors. All the while a prune flavor accompanied by an alcohol flavor creep into the taste. At the end a somewhat alcohol flavored, dark fruit sweet and lightly bready flavor are left on the tongue. Delicious. Mouthfeel- the body of the beer was about right for its abv., being on the creamier and thicker side, with a carbonation level that was on the lower side. Both the body and the carbonation accentuated all the dark fruit and malty flavors as well as complemented the warming feel of the alcohol quite nicely. Overall - Rated high for a reason. It has a wonderful taste, aroma, and feel . Delicious.

Ha! Look at that happy Monk. No girls, vows of chastity, maybe silence, only so he can serve Our Lord. Don’t know it that would keep me happy. But being drunk on this great beer might help. Cheers to St. Bernardus Brouwerij for making a great Monk’s style brew. The beer itself is a cloudy brown with bits of the lees floating in the mix. Head is slightly tan with a few more of those bit. (Might have been a little less than gentle with this bottle before the pour.) Nose of caramel sweetness, nice toasted malts, smallest hint of nuts and some bready yeasts. The taste has some booze, lots and lots of lovely roasted and carmelized malts, there’s some sweetness in there too. Very clean finish with a lasting taste of malts. Nice beer without a lot of the overly fruity raisins flavours that seem to come with this type.

Dark Brown with a small creamy khaki head. Aroma is sweet with lots of chocolate and marzipan. Taste is as above but with some herbal bitterness. Full body, high but soft carbonation. Dry chocolatey after taste, some warming alcohol.

Bottle 330ml. Pours with huge white head, dark amber/brown color. Aroma is absolutely fantastic. Lot of dark fruits, raisins, plums, candied sugar, caramel, bread, also spicy belgian notes. Very complex. It’s sweet, with some nice notes of fruits, caramel, light bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel, highly carbonated. For sure, one of the best belgian beers, I like it even more than Rochefort 10.

Too much spicy, malted bread for my liking. Will have to try again once I realign my spirit.

A deep velvety brown color beer with an extremely aggressive dense tan foamy head that fades to a lingering veil that explodes with any sudden movement. Good lacing. Fine malt aroma with Beligum yeast faint aspects of cloves and fruit. Taste is rich and complex malts. I taste also cloves candied sugar and sweet fruitiness of plums or raisins. Oh yeah, and a big alcohol bite. It feels in the mouth to be a thin to medium bodied beer with a dry finish and alcohol warming. Pleasing to look at and pleasing to drink.
