The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Actually identical with the WestVleteren XII. One of my favorite beers!

Look: dark brown slightly hazy almost no head. Aroma: fruity sourness with prominent alcohol notes. Taste: sweet balanced with fruity sourness and some bitterness. Flavour: caramel, rum, fruits, spicy hops, plume wine. Slightly harsh alcohol in the aftertaste. Good but not as complex as expected.

Poured from a bottle. Dark walnut hue with thin tan\ white head with medium lacing. Plum, fig, raisin, with hints of cherry in nose & taste. Malt sweetness has caramel and molasses in its candied profile. A slight flash of alcohol in the nose and finish.

Classic quad stuff going on... plums, sweet malts, bread... cherries... bit more of a hoppy bite to this than with some of the other renowned quads, which makes for a fresher beer. Slips down far too easily.

Bottle. Pours is dark with medium off-white head. Intense aroma of malts, fruity, dark dried fruits, plums, figues, candized brown sugar. Taste is light to moderate sweet with a little hoppy bitter kick, malty based, dark fruity mouthfeel. Medium to heavy body, medium dry, creamy texture, lively carbonation, light alcohol warmth in finish.

One of the best examples of a belgian quad. Its also a great gateway beer into the craft scene, which is what the beer was for me. Often compared to the Westy 12, recently thats somewhat valid. The Westy 12, as it is brewed recently, is a more hoppy, far more drinkable, and seemingly more alcoholic version of this.

caramel, roasty, fruits; amber/brown with minimal head, medium bitterness, medium body, oily feel, also sour, an awful example of what a beer can be,
