COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

33 cl bottle shared two ways. Pours a dark bronze with a frothy dirt white head. Nose is very sweet with prunes, raisins, some yeasty notes and light grain. Taste is very smooth and balanced. Again prunes, figs, some vanilla, light yeast and some cereal. Fairly easy to drink and no sign whatsoever of the high ABV.

Currently my favorite beer. Smooth and consistent, alcohol is hidden very well.

The beer is a dark but somewhat transparent brown. It’s taste is amazing slightly sweet with fruit but also balanced with dark cocoa and coffee notes. All around great beer.

Dried fruits, plum, coffee liquier and sweet cake on nose. After worming it’s a festival of deep and sweet malty flavours. Cocoa, coffee, essence of plums with added herbal and cinamon spices. Universe in a small bottle!

Tap at Hilpea Hauki, Helsinki. Aromas and flavors: Belgian yeast, dark fruits and malts. Super soft.

draft and I have had this several times but never rated until now. pours a darkish red brown with nice white lasting head. the aroma was of sweet malts, dark fruits caramel slight breadiness of the yeast. the flavor is just incredible for a sipper. sweet malts, caramel, dark fruits blended perfectly together slight bread/yeast with a mildly warm alcohol burn on the end. words cannot begin to describe the smoothness of this ale. if you cant have westy 12 then you might as well get this one. plus its always available.

From my previous experience with quadrupels, I had decided that I did not like the style. Not really excited about ever trying the rather dear Westvletern 12, until someone points out that the St Bernardus Abt would be very close to the iconic W12, and much more affordable. As I had particularly enjoyed other products of this brewery, I had a go. And now everything has changed. If quadrupels are really like this, then I want more. This dark amber beer has those fruits in the cellar holding the main backbone of the aroma and taste. An explosion of apples, plums, peaches and apricots, old books and wooden crates, wicker baskets and dusty curtains, dark empty wine bottles and firewood. It’s all so round and timeless, with sweet malts, vanilla and yeast…roasted almonds…wine… prunes…honey … wow! So perfectly crafted, altogether the flavours are well-mended, nothing standing out or overshadowing each other, with a reasonably dry finish, smooth, one would never dream of the high ABV hadn’t it been so famous.

Bottle. Now this is one of my Belgian classic favorites, next to Orval. And much better (and I dare to say more complex), than it’s secret rejected cousin Westvleteren 12. In the aroma I find sweet malts, toffee/caramel, dark fruit, raisons, sweet alcohol, some spices maybe. Taste is complex but well balanced. The alcohol is present but not overwhelming. Drink it from the 75 or 150 cl bottles; it’s even better.

Bottle. Dark amber-brown with a lasting, creamy off-white head. The aroma is balanced nicely between fruit and malt, with some spices and yeast. The flavor is sweet malt, honey, fruits, caramel, a little bitterness and a warming alcohol finish. Great beer, I know we get this back in Tasmania so I’ll definitely be getting this again.

Black beer with a small white head. Smells like caramel and strong alcohol. Taste is caramel, fruits strong herps. A fantastic beer, not so good as a westvleter?

Aromat piwa nieco winny, słodowy nad wyraz klasyczny i bardzo dobry bez udziwnień - nigdy takiego nie piłem. Ponadto pomarańcza w zapachu i smaku. Dochodzi do tego zapach stodoły i wsi :) Karmelowość i ukryta słodycz nadaje temu piwu dużo gładkości a jednocześnie pijalności. Później odczuwalne nuty sterylne jak najbardziej na miejscu
