Very rich, thick malty taste, almost meaty flavour with lots of raisens/figs/prunes and oak, grains, yeast, and spices, quite sweet and viscous. The alcohol is well hidden, an excellent slow drinking beer. Bottle has a drawing of a balding monk with a very good beer in his hand.
Appearance: In my limited experience, this sets the standard for strong dark ales. A deep orange-brown color, almost completely opaque. The head never really disappears from the top of the beer.
Smell: This beer smells better than the smell of any other beer which my nose has smelled. Smells like fresh bread, with strong malty tones.
Taste: This is possibly the best-tasting beer I’ve tried to date. If I go fat and bald from drinking this beer, it’s worth the price. God bless the monks from Westvleteren, who apparently created the recipe for this beer. God bless also the brewers at Watou who make this intense stuff. The beer is full-bodied, and leaves a coating in your mouth (a good thing). I’m not that good at picking out individual flavors, but I can taste sweet fruity flavors (plums, grapes, and bananas) with malt (chocolate and bread). I poured this below the temperature recommended on the bottle (52-56°F), and I think the taste becomes more intense as the liquid warms. CafeeOndineke (33), Aalst, Belgium

Has a very homebrewed quality. Me and my girl thoroughly enjoyed it. Not a beer to be taken lightly, please sip with full enjoyment. I picked it up for 10.95 per 1pt9.4oz. monkeychugg55 (244), Joliet, Illinois, USA

Pours the deepest of browns with a lasting foamy beige head. There are a lot of tan particles dancing around the middle of the body. The aroma is wonderfully ever-changing and complex Dates, plum, raisin, apple, pear, chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, anise, and a decent bit of alcohol. The flavor is every bit as complex, but so much more intense. Chewy palate with light fizzy carbonation that seems to hover in the mouth. Finish is merely a smooth decline of amazing flavors with a slight alcohol warming. Wonderful, wonderful beer. MrGGen (244), Italy

Slight, off-white head. Deep purple, reddish coloring with minimal carbonation. Very fruity on the nose combined with alcohol and some yeast. Overall smooth body, with some pleasant carbonation. Prunes, raisins, spice, alcohol. This beer was far more complex on the palate as it warmed up. If you get this served to you "American Cold", please, do yourself a favor and let it sit for a moment and warm up. Definitely one of my favorites! There’s dark fruit in the forefront (prunes, cherries), and bright, slightly bitter notes in the back (orange peel, hints of clove and coriander seed)
Great mouthfeel. It’s syrupy, but not overly sweet.
This is an almost perfect quad, quite probably my favourite.
