Slacks (357), Bolton, Ontario, Canada Oct 7, 2007 1 Pint, courtesy of wanderingman: WM said he’d bought this bottle in April so we knew it had aged a minimum of six months. Poured deep brown and red, heavily speckled with particles of flavour, even through the off-white bountiful head. Lots of alcohol in the aroma, paired with milk chocolate, prunes, rock candy, and sour fruit. Aroma is busy, tons to offer. You’ll find lots of yeast and bread along with figs, prunes, plums, cloves, milk chocolate, and a hearty dose of alcohol. These Belgians are so often well done and this is obviously no different - let it warm up, the flavours just charge out. Found it a bit chalky on the tongue, thickly coating it while going down smoothly, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it.
alexkeil (18), New York, USA Oct 10, 2008 Great label...pours dark copper color with big off white head, great head retention, aroma is mostly yeast and alcohol, medium mouthful with flavors of dark fruits, oak, chocolate mousse, good aftertaste that isn’t overpowering...a masterful balance and really satisfying drink JonnyDr (112), , South Yorkshire, England Oct 9, 2008 Deep amber beer with medium lasting white head. Spices, malt and bread lead to smooth finish. Rather thin-bodied. Beaten easily by Rocheforte Trappiste 10. Disappointing. jacobp51 (3), San Diego, California, USA does not count Oct 9, 2008 A great Belgian beer all around. This is a close substitution for the famed Westvleteren 12, and is a lot easier to find. My taste came from the tap at the Toronado in San Diego. The color is a mud brown with lots of suspended yeast. The flavor is fruity and sweet. Not a lot of bitterness to it. Overall, this is a very enjoyable beer to drink and share with some friends. Cheers! xpimptastikx (24), Austin, Texas, USA Oct 7, 2008 Pours a deep brown with a lingering tan head. Smells of raisins, figs, and caramel. As the temperature rises every sip changes. The closest things to a Westy 12. buzzoven (152), Japan Oct 7, 2008 Glory in a glass. Deep brown dark colour with a speckled tan head. Smell of rum, licorice, coffee, toffee, chocolate mousse. Sipping this is like sucking on angel’s wings...a bounty of desireable tastes just dancing on the tongue; flavours abounding on the palate like some sort of wildflower blooming and bursting. Extremely well balanced and the 10.5% alcohol is felt with a slight burn (aaahhhh) but is very well concealed amongst the rum, oak, malted barley, maple, figs, candied apple, raisins, vanilla, the list goes on and on. I like the jolly parson label as well. Buy or die!
