cking (727), North Canton, Ohio, USA Aug 13, 2007 The large bottles of this fine treat recently appeared at one of the local shops and I found it fitting to get one as a gift to myself for my 31st birthday. Popped the cork and slowly poured my first glassful into a nice big wine glass. Sturdy dark brown color with some amber highlights. An immensely thick billowing head that provided plenty of dense fluffy lacing. One of THE most enjoyable aromas I’ve ever been around, I sniffed on this for what seemed like ages. Layers of dark rich sugary malt and earthy yeast. Lots of black licorice and fermented cherries. Nice spiciness, reminded me of nutmeg, anise, and even some light caraway seed. Beautiful aroma, top notch for sure. Medium body, extremely smooth with an incredibly easiness to it. A touch of alcohol harshness attacks the palate, and it soon mellows as a nice effect on the palate. Sweet and filling, this is a fantastic sipper. So tasty and good! Loads of sweet bready malt, sugary and smooth with some rich caramel. I could even pick up hints of roasted malt and some fine chocolate. Cherry syrup, fermented figs, anise and black licorice. Mild alcohol presence backed by peppery spices. Great yeasty earthiness. Intensely complex yet straightforward the flavor is very assertive. Fantastic Belgian, absolutely first class. A wonderful gift to myself,
Swolf3 (38), Elkton, Maryland, USA Sep 6, 2008 Bottle. Poured dark brown color in color with thick head. Aroma was earthy, malts, and a bit of fruits. Taste was mostly the same along with a touch of alcohol. My first Abt 12. nqualls (207), Tennessee, USA Sep 6, 2008 Bottle. Poured into a trappist glass. Poured a dark brown color with a huge brown head that persists. Aroma was sweet malt, dark fruits and alcohol. Flavor was mainly dark fruits with a little warming alcohol on the end. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Great beer. nbutler11 (164), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 5, 2008 Pours a deep plum color from the bomber with gorgeous lacing and an obscene brown head. Absurdly cavernous in it’s aroma and flavor, not to mention the SEDIMENT, which makes this brew look like a robin’s egg when held to the light. A beer to behold. swillguzzler99 (13), Glendale, Arizona, USA Sep 4, 2008 Pours opaque chocolate brown with a beige foamy head that persists. Nose is very mild, but I detect malt and faint ethanol. You can taste the hops; it’s the perfect amount of bitter. Finishes with a slight alcohol tingle that is promptly quenched by the next sip. It is easy to see why this beer is highly rated. Mr_Stitch (138), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 3, 2008 Bottle. Pours a nice walnut brown with a thin tan head that has no staying power. Smell is earthy, dates, rasins, sweet malts, and hints of wood. Taste is very mellow, sweet yet not overpowering with all the things that you can smell playing nicely in the taste. Mouthfeel is soft and enjoyable with light carbonation and a slight alcohol burn.
