blklab2007 (538), Connecticut, USA Aug 25, 2007 Updated: Jun 7, 2008 1 pt 9.4oz bottle have been saving this one for a while. bottle poured with vigor and had a nice foamy head that diminished to a nice layer of little pools of carbination erupting to the surface all over. when held to the light there is a fair amount of sediment in the glass and the color is a nutty brown with some reddish tone. the body in the glass is thick with smells of cherry, yeasts, spices of many flavors, and an alcohol warmth. but on to the tasting part, wow hits with so many good things going on. heavy malt is apparent, cherry, plum, fig, cinnamon, and as another rater stated anise, and some tasty yeasty notes with a flowery snap. really has just the right carbination and the alcohol is well hidden. second glass is pouring just as well as the first, really pretty in the glass. so the question is does it live up to the hype? in my mind it does, looks great in the glass, smell is complex and not overpowering, and the beer itself has many great flavors that combine well. have been looking for a beer to put at the top of the pack and this fits the bill well.
Swolf3 (38), Elkton, Maryland, USA Sep 6, 2008 Bottle. Poured dark brown color in color with thick head. Aroma was earthy, malts, and a bit of fruits. Taste was mostly the same along with a touch of alcohol. My first Abt 12. nqualls (207), Tennessee, USA Sep 6, 2008 Bottle. Poured into a trappist glass. Poured a dark brown color with a huge brown head that persists. Aroma was sweet malt, dark fruits and alcohol. Flavor was mainly dark fruits with a little warming alcohol on the end. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Great beer. nbutler11 (164), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Sep 5, 2008 Pours a deep plum color from the bomber with gorgeous lacing and an obscene brown head. Absurdly cavernous in it’s aroma and flavor, not to mention the SEDIMENT, which makes this brew look like a robin’s egg when held to the light. A beer to behold. swillguzzler99 (13), Glendale, Arizona, USA Sep 4, 2008 Pours opaque chocolate brown with a beige foamy head that persists. Nose is very mild, but I detect malt and faint ethanol. You can taste the hops; it’s the perfect amount of bitter. Finishes with a slight alcohol tingle that is promptly quenched by the next sip. It is easy to see why this beer is highly rated. Mr_Stitch (138), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 3, 2008 Bottle. Pours a nice walnut brown with a thin tan head that has no staying power. Smell is earthy, dates, rasins, sweet malts, and hints of wood. Taste is very mellow, sweet yet not overpowering with all the things that you can smell playing nicely in the taste. Mouthfeel is soft and enjoyable with light carbonation and a slight alcohol burn.
