The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Bottle, approximately two years or more old. Whoops? Pours a coffee hued caramel brown with a large creamy tanned beige head. Big sweet malt, hints of cocoa and coffee, malty and sweet, loads of caramel and oxidization. Beautiful. Medium bodied, smooth and soft. Malty and warm, full of caramel and oxidization. Rich and yet still delicate and balanced. Really nice balance of oxidized malt and caramel. A lot of depth. Malty and smooth, lingering sweet malt and caramel. Never boozy, super smooth and drinkable. Warming hints on the finish, more caramel.

Burgundy pour, rupturing head falling to a small film. Bogglingly complex nose. Sweet dried cherries and fig, cola, caramel, red apple, baking spice, dark bread, floral, estery fruits, very delicate clove (thank god). Seemingly an enigma. Complex yet simple. Flavor is sweet ripe black cherries, whole grain bread, raisin and date, slight illusion of cocoa, estery spice strategically appears to contrast sweet notes, an utterance of earthiness. As of less than a week ago, I’ve been a non-believer in Belgians. Delirium Nocturnum opened my eyes. Now I tried this. My mind, soul, and palate are satisfied and illuminated to the world of Belgian ales. Sincere complexity, sweet, but not cloying, a true testament to the ale. At $10.99, I’ll be keeping some in my fridge at all times.

Flesje thuis gedronken. Donkerbruin, helder bier met stevig schuim. Weinig aroma, ietsje fruitig en hoppig. Smaak van koffie en donker fruit. Nasmaak is licht bitter.

Dark brown with ruby notes. Highish carbonation. Beautiful lacing. Aromas of caramel, phenols, rum, and lightly roasted nuts. Very smooth, surprisingly light bodied (Well not actually light bodied, but for its abv) It is a very sweet beer, but nicely balanced by the phenols and roasted flavors. Finishes with a touch of caramel on the tongue, before opening up into a spice clove-like finish. There just the slightest touch of acidity, which helps give this some dried fruit flavors. This is simply, an incredibly beer, very drinkable. One of the best beers in the world.

I am going to have to buy another from a different retailer to compare as this was sub par. Bottle at 12 degrees Celsius. Aroma was a little funky, and the flavour was also strange. And I love big malty quads. Head was off white and fluffy, but didn’t last. Will edit review after having another.

Dark brown color. Fruit aromas, spices, alcohol, brown sugar. Taste of fruits, caramel, sugar, spices, yeast and alcohol. Alcohol a bit too dominant. Really good Abt/Quad.

75 cl bottle. Dark brown colour with quickly disappering beige head. Aroma is malt, leather, nuts, caramel, notes of dark fruits. Taste is exceptional, with a sweet malty start going over to a blend of toffee, wine, nuts and dark fruits. Full bodied with lively carbonation. Very warming feel. Very pleasent sweet finish. This is how you connect flavours, simply outstanding.
