The St. Bernardus Abt 12 is the pride of our stable, the nec plus ultra of our brewery. Abbey ale brewed in the classic ’Quadrupel’ style of Belgium’s best Abbey Ales. Dark with a full, ivory-colored head. It has a fruity aroma, full of complex flavours and excels because of its long bittersweet finish with a hoppy bite. Worldwide seen as one of the best beers in the world. It’s a very balanced beer, with a full-bodied taste and a perfect equilibrium between malty, bitter, and sweet. One of the original recipes from the days of license-brewing for the Trappist monks of Westvleteren.

Bottle. The pour was a murky medium chestnut brown with an average sized (1-2 finger) light brown frothy head that reduced to a large cap, which lasted throughout and allowed for some excellent sheets of lace. The aroma was a dark bread malt and a sweaty yeast with notes of caramel, a host of dark fruit (black cherries, plums, figs and raisins) and a large hint of alcohol. The taste was moderately sweet and a bit acidic with a nice caramel flavor in the beginning, and finished sweetly acetic with a big dose of dark fruit and a heavy alcohol funk at the end. The flavor lasted for quite a while with a fruity alcohol warming sensation left behind for one to enjoy. Mouthfeel was medium in body with a creamy, dry, syrupy texture and a nice lively carbonation. Overall this is an intensely satisfying and tasty beer, with a ton of unique flavors that are blended together extremely well. This is most definitely a brew to be savored again and again…

Ha! Look at that happy Monk. No girls, vows of chastity, maybe silence, only so he can serve Our Lord. Don’t know it that would keep me happy. But being drunk on this great beer might help. Cheers to St. Bernardus Brouwerij for making a great Monk’s style brew. The beer itself is a cloudy brown with bits of the lees floating in the mix. Head is slightly tan with a few more of those bit. (Might have been a little less than gentle with this bottle before the pour.) Nose of caramel sweetness, nice toasted malts, smallest hint of nuts and some bready yeasts. The taste has some booze, lots and lots of lovely roasted and carmelized malts, there’s some sweetness in there too. Very clean finish with a lasting taste of malts. Nice beer without a lot of the overly fruity raisins flavours that seem to come with this type.

Dark Brown with a small creamy khaki head. Aroma is sweet with lots of chocolate and marzipan. Taste is as above but with some herbal bitterness. Full body, high but soft carbonation. Dry chocolatey after taste, some warming alcohol.

Bottle 330ml. Pours with huge white head, dark amber/brown color. Aroma is absolutely fantastic. Lot of dark fruits, raisins, plums, candied sugar, caramel, bread, also spicy belgian notes. Very complex. It’s sweet, with some nice notes of fruits, caramel, light bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel, highly carbonated. For sure, one of the best belgian beers, I like it even more than Rochefort 10.

Too much spicy, malted bread for my liking. Will have to try again once I realign my spirit.

A deep velvety brown color beer with an extremely aggressive dense tan foamy head that fades to a lingering veil that explodes with any sudden movement. Good lacing. Fine malt aroma with Beligum yeast faint aspects of cloves and fruit. Taste is rich and complex malts. I taste also cloves candied sugar and sweet fruitiness of plums or raisins. Oh yeah, and a big alcohol bite. It feels in the mouth to be a thin to medium bodied beer with a dry finish and alcohol warming. Pleasing to look at and pleasing to drink.

20/VI/14 - 33cl bottle @ ’t Einde (Gent) - BB: 25/VI/18 (2014-647) Thanks to Thomas and Annelies for the celebration beer in honour of their child-to-be! :-)

Clear dark purple brown beer, big irregular light beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: malty, caramel, liquorish, aniseed, bit spicy. MF: lots of carbon, medium body. Taste: quite some liquorice, caramel, aniseed, little burned, sourish. Aftertaste: aniseed, little bitter, liquorish, dried fruits, mocha, bit of chocolate. Honestly, this is not how I remember this beer. I thought it was way less spicy. Very odd...

Copper brown pour, with thick, long lasting head. Lively carbonation from bottle conditioning . Sweet toasty oats on the aroma, with Belgian yeast coming through as it warms. The flavour is full of hazelnuts , almonds, and a balanced hop finish. Totally luxurious beer.
