normally a big fan of the st. bernardus stuff. fruity nose, creamy mouth feel (did i just say that?)... it’s not bad. definitely not my favorite of their stuff. raisin plum and the like... i wouldn’t say impressive necessarily... but okay.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brown pour with a massive head with excellent lacing that lasts forever. Nose is of dark fruit, raisins and dates, against a malt backbone with a hint of spice. Light medium body and very well carbonated. Alcohol is well hidden with dark fruit and malt flavors. Spice is present, but subdued. Clean finish with a slight alcoholic bitterness. Not as flavorful or smooth as Gouden Carolus Noel, which in my opinion, is the best of the Belgian Christmas ales.

I had this at Global Brew. Pours brown with a tan head. Taste dark fruits, lightly sweet, boozy. I thought this was good. I would drink this again.

75cl bottle. Sweet and spicy aroma with hints of fruits and yeast. High carbonation, kind of like a chimay. Really refreshing even though it is sweet as well. Quite boozy with tastes of dates and a hint of cherries. Great palate with a nice balance.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Total Wine in Boca Raton, FL. Trappiste chalice. Pours a deep brown with a reddish hue. Very thick, fluffy white head. Head lasted like it was a nitro pour. Aroma of dark breads, cereal, sweet dark candies, Belgian yeasts, and dark fruits. Also some spices. The taste was similar with the bread and sweet candies mostly and then the spices and booziness come in at the finish. Creamy, soft and relaxing for the palette. Medium carbonation, full body. Great winter beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(bottle, 33cl) Dark brown colour with a ruby shine and a big and tanned foamy head. Fruit-accented and mildly toasted malty aroma with notes of Christmas spices and vinous hints of dried fruits. Sweet and delicately bitter flavour, almost full bodied with a smooth carbonation. Dark malty taste with slightly vinous fruity notes of dried cranberries, cherries and plums, as well as a present spicy touch, including notes of cinnamon and other x-mas spices; sweet and delicately bitter toast-malty finish with balanced spicy notes and a well-embedded alcoholic strength. Deserves the name Christmas Ale. 23.XI.13

On tap at Roscoe’s in Portland, OR. Colour...dark amber with no head. Nose...dried dark fruits, grape skins, crushed cherries. Palate...tangy up front with macerated currants, fig paste, marzipan and kirschwasser. There’s plenty of booze and the finish is lengthy and fruity.
