COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Extra 4 is a classic Belgian “Single” style, light golden in color, full of flavor and character and brewed with more hops and bitterness in comparison to the other well known St Bernardus abbey ales. Extra 4 will be brewed with high fermentation and bottled conditioned with an ABV of 4.8%. Extra 4 will be a unique, tasty and refreshing spring and summer quencher with a lower alcohol content than such other popular St Bernardus products as Abt 12, Tripel and Prior 8.

Hamirubi (176) - Waarschoot, BELGIUM - APR 27, 2015
10cl sample at the Zythos Beer Festival (Leuven, April 25th 2015). Had this lovely ale in a small glass goblet, bursting of citrus flavors and grain notes. The taste is very dry and has obvious notes of wheat and yeasts. As a quencher: Very good in its kind.

13.2 oz bottle. BB 15 04 18. Nose is caramel, bubblegum, and yeasty white bread. Murky yellow with a medium white head. Flavor is lightly bitter with light contrast sweet notes and a malty background.

33cL capped bottle into St. Bernardus mini goblet. BB April 15, 2016. Pour is pale gold with large strong head that won’t quit. Fades to surface covering lacing. Clear body with small bubbles constantly moving around. Aroma is doughy yeast with baked pie crust malt. Mild sweetness and a dusty Belgian maltiness and mild non-banana esters. Flavor is mostly dulled dough. A light zing to the mouthfeel. Much lighter flavors, the malts seem already a bit stale. Bottom of the bottle muddies the beer. Thick malt yet a pretty dry finish. I wish I tried this a little fresher but it’s a thicker heftier single than I imagine in my mind, but a beautiful beer in line with the breweries house character, almost like a small tripel.

Recommended temp 6-10 C, came straight out of my food fridge, so likely around 5-6, letting it warm up a bit while the head settles.
Poured straight into a pint glass, got more than half the bottle in before the head came near to the top. Slight bit hazy straw yellow color, builds up a huge big bubbled white head that lasts long and while slowly settles leaves plenty of lacing on the glass walls.
Fruity estery scent at first, not intense but well noticeable, goes a bit towards apricots I find. Aroma also the slightest bit acidic, not from bacteria or wild yeast I gather, more of a well attenuated beer, also trace amounts of canned tomatoes, and some slight yeast character. Smells rather fresh, but also laid back in a way.
Mellow smooth taste, some grains, some bitterness, hints of a malty sweetness and the tiny bit caramel hints. Aftertaste is light sugary, some bitterness, also somewhat malty sweet. Herbal hops coming through in the aftertaste as well, also hints again of canned tomatoes.
Fairly smooth, to the low side CO2 mouthfeel, medium low bitterness.
Nice, fresh, drinkable (hinkabilitet), perhaps it doesn’t stand out a whole lot, but for drinking a pint and getting refreshed works really well.
When the last bit of the bottle is poured, what looks like an upside down small brown forrest mushroom (skivling) comes down, then transforming into a continously moving lava stream. Taste goes more fruity, actually turns sweeter, gets more character. Also more typical Belgian ale yeast character comes through in the taste and aftertaste. Scent wasn’t affected as much. So with the yeast pour the beer gets more character, but affects the freshness a bit. Still works nice.
Score reflects first impressions (pre yeast pour).

Flaska från Saveur Biére. Smak och doft av humle, citrus, banan, koriander, hö, gräs, örter, belgisk jäst med toner av äpple, päron, cederträ och metall. Lagom sötma, godistoner, med pepprig eftersmak. Riktigt gott!

Bottle from the Beer Emporium, Bristol. Clear gold, with a big, white, head and slight carbonation. Sweetish, floral hop and soten fruit aroma. Flavour had some candy sugar, green herbs, more fruit and a refreshing finish. Pleasant.

translucent gold, puffy small bubbled head, lacing galore. Estery nose, doughy sugar, hints of banana and gum, really dusty cedar. Flavor more estery, loads of sugary gum and apple skin up front, metallic mid that dries incredibly by the zesty carbed end, HUGE cracker finish that lasts forever. Very expressive, loaded with flavor at 4%, super balanced.

Pours pale yellow with white head. Aroma is spicy, citrus and wheat. Flavour is citrus, wheat and mild spicyness. This could be a good summer beer.
