COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Extra 4 is a classic Belgian “Single” style, light golden in color, full of flavor and character and brewed with more hops and bitterness in comparison to the other well known St Bernardus abbey ales. Extra 4 will be brewed with high fermentation and bottled conditioned with an ABV of 4.8%. Extra 4 will be a unique, tasty and refreshing spring and summer quencher with a lower alcohol content than such other popular St Bernardus products as Abt 12, Tripel and Prior 8.

If you're into the trendy "session" beers (aka weak beer not worth the calories), and want a descent abbey session, then pick some up. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours hazy yellow, thick white head, high carbonation, bit gassy actually. Light soapy aromas, light lemon citrus. Taste brings a spicy note, but mostly a bit soapy. Coriander comes through. Thin, fizzy, not great.

Bottle at home. Hazy yellow pour, thick white head. Aroma of spicy Belgian hops, some lemongrass and slightly soapy. Flavor is subtle bitter, slightly watery texture and decently balanced. Well drinkable.

Aroma: Moderate lemongrass, a little ointment, some hay and Pinot Grigio. Appearance: Translucent pale gold pour with lively carbonation supporting a foamy white head. Flavor: White wine meets lemongrass up front; ointment/slight gum becomes more prevalent mid-palate; dried out, but slightly yeasty finish. A little clove comes through as this warms. Palate: Full body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly bitter finish. Overall: Definitely worth a shot for Belgian beer lovers.

The latest Sint-Bernardus, an ’enkel’ inspired by similar ’refectory beers’ from the trappist monks, tasted at De Vlasbloem in Sint-Pauwels. Snow white, moussy, stable head over a deep golden blonde, misty beer. Aroma shows subdued fruitiness, pear, apricot, peach, pineapple, but also cardboard, baker’s yeast, white bread, dried orange peel, raw potatoes, grass, tea leaves. Soft, restrained, vaguely sweetish fruitiness in the mouth, peach and pear again, sharp carbonation, minerally, over a bready yeastiness and somewhat grainy maltiness, dryish, with yeasty, leafy and grassy hop bitterish and slightly malty finish. Well-made Belgian blond abbey beer, but somehow I expected more from this, being a member of the noble Sint-Bernardus family...

Bottle at home. Golden pour with thin white head. Quickly became a small foam. Sweet-sour aroma. Sweet-sour taste. Got better near the end. Belgian stong ale hints. Sweet, yeast and some sour hints. Okay.

Amazing beer. Estery, like apricots and pears. Black pepper and clove. Dry, but great thick mouthfeel with lots of carbonation. Fantastic table beer. A bit of a soapy aftertaste.

Bottle from de Bierschuur in Poppel. The beer has light golden color and a full white head, with a lot of CO2. The aroma is grassy, floral, spicy, fruity (hints of banana and citrus) and a little yeast is noticable. The taste is spicy and light sour but also a nice hop bitterness in the end is noticable. The taste is well balanced. The finish is refreshing and a light bitter. A nice ale, which reminds me of a white beer. Not as good as the rest of beers from Bernardus, but I like the idea to brew a low alcohol beer.

Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Big white head. Hazy yellow colored beer. Aromas of yeast, rice, wheat, some malts, hint of flowers, herbal and hay tints. Flavours of herbs, cream, some flowers, yeast, light fruity, grass and hay tones with some malts, floral, wheat and grains. Aftertaste is bitter, herbal, some yeast, floral and herbal. Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied and a light creamy texture. Decent.

Pours a hazy pale yellow with a big dense white head. The smell is earthy malt, clove, pepper. The taste is bright and lightly hoppy and fruity with dry and bitter finish. Light body with soft carbonation. Very nice stuff.
