Extra 4 is a classic Belgian ďSingleĒ style, light golden in color, full of flavor and character and brewed with more hops and bitterness in comparison to the other well known St Bernardus abbey ales. Extra 4 will be brewed with high fermentation and bottled conditioned with an ABV of 4.8%. Extra 4 will be a unique, tasty and refreshing spring and summer quencher with a lower alcohol content than such other popular St Bernardus products as Abt 12, Tripel and Prior 8.

If you're into the trendy "session" beers (aka weak beer not worth the calories), and want a descent abbey session, then pick some up. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Light floral bread aroma. Pillowy white head that lasts forever. Hazy golden body. Itís lightly bitter with a light refreshing tartness. Lively tingling on the tongue. Light bodied but not a lightweight as far as character. Has a lemony tartness in the finish. This is an excellent summer months thirst quencher.

I knew this beer would be different. Just 4.8% vol.alc. is not much for a belgium ale. So when I poured it, my first thought was - ups, this is a belgium white beer, a Blanche. But no, it isnít. It takes sebveral sips to get onto the boat as my first impression was: too light... But then you recognize that this beer offers a lot for the low alcohol percentage. Citric acids mix with yeasty fruit notes and hoppy dryness - a descent dryness I admit. And now I understand this beer. Itís a trappist alternative to a thirst killing lager - and this is very nice. You can have quite a lot of these on a hot summer day at a terrace and still have a full taste. Imagine a trappist beer. Think of all the tastes you connect with these special monestary brews. And please forget all this quickly again. This is a trappist, yes. But it isnít. Its more a trappist interpretation of a thirst quenching summer brew. And this turns out to be a success.

Bottle bought at Hopduvel Gent. Aroma of peaches, yeast, apricot, whitebread. Taste is coreander, sourish, wheat ale? Donít really like the sour part.

Bottle 33cl. Cloudy yellow golden color, big rocky white head, good retention, lasting thin yeasty layer and fair lacing; aroma malty, yeasty, fruity, apricot, pineapple, star fruit, orange peel, lemon grass, hay; taste moderate to light sweet, moderate bitter, yeasty, lemon, spicy notes; light to medium body, creamy to watery texture, spicy mouthfeel (pepper and coriander), average carbonation, dry herbal finish, bit medicinal; overall a nice beer, has a lot of character but it could use a bit more depth.

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2014 Bottle from Dranken Geers (I think) Oostakker, nr Gent, consumed at home, Merton, Sunday 14th December 2014. Pale gold in colour with a white head. Some might say refreshing, clean easy drinking, I say, thin, watery and rather disappointing. I know most Belgian beers are strong but look to Brasserie de la Senne as an example of how to make a great low strength beer. This is pretty shite really. Threw the rest away, as Loz points out donít waste time drinking rubbish beer. A5 A4 T5 P3 Ov10 2.7

Bottle from Julios. Pours a very pale yellow with very little head. I love all the stronger St Bernardus offerings but this is not one of those. It is still a good light ale with pleasant lemon and pine notes but it is definitely not worth the high price to purchase a bottle of the stuff.

First rating in forever, it seems. Golden yellow color with lots of dense, white foam. Aroma of Pilsner malts and grassy, herbal hops. Slightly estery (a little clove) though not too overwhelming. Very quenching, dry, although the mouthfeel seems a bit dense. Damn good, even with a little age. Iíd love to have a really fresh bottle of this.
