Sonicdescent (374), Donora, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 23, 2009 Poured from Bottle with a best by 10 xx xx date into a goblet.
Pours a murky brown with some floaties. Thick creamy head disappears into a lid with somewhat inconsistent lacing, sometimes thick, sometimes none at all.
Smells exceptional. Floral, sweet, fruity. Very similar to the Westy 8. If the flavor is even close to that, I have found my new go-to beer and a new favorite style.
Drumroll...it is similar! A nice sweetness but not cloying, with a taste mostly of grapes. A nice hint of bread and cola as well.
Mouthfeel is a tad more carbonated than the Westy, but the body is very good and light.
Drinkability..this is my new go to beer. It’s not nearly as difficult to find as the Westy of course, but still not extremely easy to come by here. MmmcKay (269), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA Aug 1, 2009 Dark brown in color. Aromas are sweet and spicy especially cinnamon. Nice aromas. Not really as thrilled with flavors or palette. Light and quick. Didn’t really stick with me. FROTHINGSLOSH (1965), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 28, 2009 Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a huge beige head that lingered forever. The aroma was very yeasty, tangy and sweet with moderate ripe fruits and light butterscotch. The flavor was tangy, chewy and malty with a strong yeasty note and light cherry and caramel elements. The finish was long, tangy, yeasty and fruity. Fairly full bodied. Well done. shigadeyo (2210), Harrison, Ohio, USA Jul 28, 2009 April/May 2008: St. Bernardus Pater 6 smells pretty yeasty and has a vague fruity maltiness in the flavor. There is also a creamy banana flavor, a mild bitterness, a slight oxidation character, and is toward the sweeter side. As far as appearance goes, the beer is hazy/cloudy, amber in color, and topped with a large, foamy, lasting head that creates puffy lacing marks. It has a medium to medium-full body and has a smooth texture. It is pretty good overall.
750 mL corked and caged bottle shared by Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #630 for this beer.
JanVittrup (138), København V, Denmark Jul 28, 2009 Coca cola brown, tanned high and lasting tanned non homogenous medium size bubble head.
Yeast and heavy caramel. Very nice. And thick aroma. Slight hint of hop to offset sweetness of smell.
Aroma does not translate as well in into flavor. Very neutral.
Watery feel, some fizz though not much, but light-medium body.
High scores for the aroma. And for being somewhat complex.
BJCP characterises as a Dubbel.
Purchased in Kihoskh illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jul 26, 2009 Sampled at MCBF. Who in fuck is giving this low scores in aroma? Are their nostrils the radius of a pin head? The aroma on this is in your face- brown sugar, fruity ale esters, candy, and yeast. Medium bodied with that typical Trappiste earthy mouthfeel. The beer is a nice blend of cheryy, caramel, dark fruits, yeast, and spice. Complex without being extreme. Felsenbrau (19), Middletown, Ohio, USA Jul 18, 2009 Bottle, 330ml, from St. Bernardus "Mixed Selection" 6-pack. Pours dark amber brown with 1/2" enduring headand excellent lacing. Aroma of alcohol and sugar, with some fruit. Flavor starts sweet with apricot, walnut(?), and some brown sugar and spices. Medium body, finishes somewhat malty and bitter. Very nice, easy to drink, lacing remains long after glass is empty. SeanMacGC (233), Dublin, Ireland Jul 17, 2009 Bottle, 330ml, in Trappist glass. Pours dark ochre, with decent, but quickly thinning, head. Mild aroma of mixed fruits, with sultanas predominating. Quite light-bodied, low carbonated on the palate, with sugars and caramel surfacing. Decent ale.
