bonfunck (149), Waasmunster, Belgium Jun 8, 2009 33cl bottle from hopduvel in ghent, light brown beer, good nose, full taste malt en yeast , a bit sweeten with sugar but all well balanced, good beer gueuzeisgod (109), Graham, North Carolina, USA Jun 5, 2009 11.2 oz bottle from a four bottle mix pack that includes a very nice goblet. Lots of escaping carbonation, pours with a medium head that collapses in a few minutes, leaving behind some sticky lace on the glass. Has a pleasant smell of freshly baked holiday fruit cake- the cake part being dominant with the fruit in the background. Body is of course thinner than the 8 or 12, but still sweetly malty. Quickly tapers off to a somewhat astringent finish leaving behind some hop bitters and grippy yeast lees. Good, but I will go for the 8 or 12; love this brewery. Damico (162), Norristown, Pennsylvania, USA May 31, 2009 There is not much depth to this beer. It is pleasant in a subtle way, almost the flavor of a brown ale when moving through the mouth. There is not much carbonation to overpower the flavor either. NJJereme (261), Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA May 28, 2009 Bottle. Pours a brown opaque color with a nice, fluffy, tan head that hangs around for a while. Nice balance b/w fruitiness and bread like flavors. Medium-heavily bodied. Good stuff. kevd193213 (477), Hope Valley, Rhode Island, USA May 24, 2009 Bottle. Cloudy brown pour with a nice thick frothy off white head. Aroma of plums, bananas, yeast and malt. Taste of malt, brown sugar, dark fruit and a hint of caramel. Medium body, nice even finish. probstk (1005), Nepean, Ontario, Canada May 20, 2009 330 ml bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Cloudy, deep copper, decent tan foam.
Aroma: Yeast, light earthy funk, some minty herbals, some light molasses, brown sugar, candi sugar, banana and bubble gum esters, much like a dunkel Weizen me thinks, cereal.
Palate: Medium body and fairly full effervescence.
Flav.: Much like the nose and very much like a dunkel Weizen with some nice malts, lots of esters, light minty herbals and plenty of yeast/brad dough.
Delicious. Bigmmartin (366), Dayton, Ohio, USA May 15, 2009 Bottle. Brownish orange color with a typical big foamy head. Sweet aroma of yeast and malt. Nice solid flavor of fruit, malt, and yeast. Better than most Belgian Ales I’ve tried. A good representation of the St. Bernardus brews. WVHouseofBeer (337), Morgantown, West Virginia, USA May 15, 2009 Another solid offering from St. Bernard, the monk pours a light orange color with a big, pillowy head. A nice cornucopia of aromas fills the nostrils with smells of raisins, yeast, and a noticeable malt texture. The tastes are as if the smell was the beer itself, just an overall well rounded brew.
