ryananderson (74), Ontario, Canada Jan 31, 2006 Average. Easy to drink - some malt and not overly spicy. I find the body a bit light though. Aroma is of raisins, light hops and average malt. shrubber85 (2835), Wallhalben, Germany Jan 27, 2006 Bottle. Cherry - orange malt aroma with alcohol sharpness. Dark copper with moderate head. Sweet orange/raisin flavor with moderate carbonation and acidity. A bit on the weak side - like a more robust flavor in Belgian ales. TerryR (382), Oswego, Illinois, USA Jan 21, 2006 Partly because it is in a beautiful St. Bernadus goblet, but this is one of the nicest looking beers that I have ever seen. Deep burgundy color with a nice off white head. Great lacing. Very yeasty aroma with some dark fruits and a hint of spice. Fruit more noticeable in the flavor along with some candi sugar. Fairly dry but very smooth and lasting finish. Very nice. OldRaspy (292), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Jan 21, 2006 Pours a dark amber with an off-white head. Great lacing. Aroma was very yeasty with hints of raisins and caramel. A gentle malt taste with a nice warm alcohol finish. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA Jan 19, 2006 11.2oz bottle pours dark amber with a creamy offwhite head that stays well and laces the sides of the trappist glass. Aroma is mostly yeast, also notes of raisins, caramel, and cloves. Flavor is nice raisins, caramel, lots of yeast, some candy sugar, and some cloves. Palate is light airy and smooth to drink with a nice dry finish. Pretty nice.. TheBeerOrg (1563), Kentucky, USA Jan 10, 2006 Pours dark ruby with thin, mostly maintained off-white head. True to its heritage, this beer leaves resilient Belgian lacing. Aroma of raisins, plums, cloves, and bubble gum.
Taste begins with sweet caramel and plums, there is a brief but intense chewy/malty note, and the beer fades away leaving a trail of fruity esters. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and viscous with high carbonation. This beer has candi sweetness and caramelized wort sweetness. The yeast would dominate this beer if it were not so wonderfully balanced by the toasted malts. Impressive balance and complexity, quite delicious! GarethYoung (1110), Glasgow, Scotland Jan 10, 2006 [bottle in kulminator] fruity, raisins, caramel. good body finish is sweet and dry. pretty standard but nice dubbel. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 10, 2006 Bottle. Pours a hazy dark orange-brown with an average size fizzy off-white head. Nice sweet aroma of malt, yeast, spices, fruit and alcohol. Flavour of bready malt, yeast, brown sugar, fruit, spices and alcohol. Speaking of alcohol, I found it a little too noticeable for a beer that’s only 6.7%. Considering how great most St. Bernardus beers are the flavour was a bit of a letdown. The finish is quite fizzy, there’s lots of carbonation. Full bodied. A decent Belgian Ale.
