cazort (413), Newark, Delaware, USA Nov 13, 2005 Updated: Dec 30, 2007One of my favourite beers yet. Very foamy head, but next to no carbonation once the head dies down. The head is unusually tasty. Very aromatic: extremely fruity, and never in an unpleasant way. Tastes much like wine. Sweet, but in a completely acceptable way. Oddly, I taste a lot of alcohol, but it’s not unpleasant. Sort of caramelly, but in a subtle way. Very enjoyable, and although pricey, not unreasonably so. In my opinion, this beer beats out a number of more expensive and rarer competitors. It’s also my favorite among the St. Bernardus brews. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Nov 12, 2005 Updated: Jan 10, 2006Bottle (330ml). Poured clear deep copper with a beige lasting average head. Aroma of sweet whole-wheat bread dough, raisins, fruits, spices - really nice light caramel roast malt. Taste is mild, follows the aroma, somewhat lively and sweet. Pleasant, was expecting a blond, so bonus. Very mild. badgerben (3586), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Nov 12, 2005 Dark red color with a thin head. Good malt and bread aroma. Malty flavor with a sticky sweet syrup finish. Slight fruitiness. MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Nov 12, 2005 Murky brown pour topped with a fluffy mocha head. Plums and prunes in the aroma. Roasted malts too, with a mild alcohol waft to back it all up. Wood and prunes in the mouth, roasted malts, with a fruity alcohol aftertaste. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Medium bodied. Pretty good. wnp22 (682), Toronto (Roncesvalles Village), Ontario, Canada Nov 11, 2005 Tasted in Toronto. Obtained from LCBO as part of some form of winter / fall line up. Tasted in Orval trappist glassware. Appearance is reddish brown with thin browinish / tobacco coloured head. Somewhat murky and amazingly disturbing....Aroma of plums, dried fruit and alcohol....Maybe even on a good day christmas pudding....Flavour is somewhat dry and crisp....not nearly as sweet, matly, deep dark and delicous as I would have expected....more on the slightly sweet to dry side with hints of nastyness lingeriing in the background, but only as a minor player and not as a lead character. Oh well, such is the beerian play of life.... Radek Kliber (3926), Toronto (Can) Krotoszyn (Pol), Ontario, Canada Nov 9, 2005 Light, soft aroma of sweet malt, hits of vanilla, yeast. Neat and clean. Light brown with ruby hue. Impressive crown on top .Full bodied, bready malt based ale. Alcohol is present but this only help making great winter warmer. Very nice. MoritzF (4859), Bochum, Germany Nov 8, 2005 (bottle) Hazy and dark amber colour with a frothy tanned medium head. Light sweet malty nose with caramel, yeasts and dried fruits. Light sweet flavour, medium bodied, moderately carbonated. Slight sweet roastmalty start with caramel and a note of raisins and dried cranberries, dry and medium bitter finish. Tasty but still pretty decent Belgian Ale. MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 1, 2005 The Lure: Prunes and dates converge on the yeasty brown sugar. Cocoa powder amicably joins in to create a fine perfume of obvious trappist influence.
The Festivities: An expansive, big-bubbled mouthfeel spreads its effervescence all over the cocoa/yeast merger. Bread flour and raisins rise into a fluffy cake. A meek roastiness offers mild bitterness. Very easy to drink, this is clearly a smaller version of the 8 & 12.
Transcendence: A clear mind yields thorough results.
