Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Aug 2, 2005 Pours medium brown with off-white head. Aroma is full of sweet malt, very concentrated. Flavor has lots of ripeyellow fruit with decent malt backbone. Residuel sugar everywhere. Great lacing. Very dry on the pallet. A little surprised by the low overall on this. bu11zeye (5430), Frisco, Texas, USA Aug 2, 2005 (Bottle) Pours a cloudy brown body with a reddish tint and a small creamy beige head. Otje (668), Leiden, Netherlands Jul 31, 2005 wonderfull looking beer, brown with a HUGE biege head. aromas of fruit, yeast, camille and sweat(farmyard?). taste: caramel, fruity, bubblegum, bit bitter, alcoholic sweetness. finish is long and fruity. silky mouthfeeling. very nice! rpattinson (83), Amsterdam, Netherlands Jul 29, 2005 Mid-brown colour with a dense head; plum, cream, spice and chocolate aroma; sweet/bitter taste with black chocolate, pepper, toffee, roast and fruit aromas; bitter finish with black chocolate, burnt, liquorice, toffee and chicory aromas.
Now Westvleteren Red has gone, this will have to do. A beer packed with flavour and character. It drinks like a beer 2 or 3% stronger. Has some very pleasant dark malt flavours. mkobes (2103), paramus, New Jersey, USA Jul 20, 2005 Bottle at Ommegange. Deep brown in color with a nice fluffy head. Aroma is fruity and malty. Raisiny. Hoppy and malty flavor. Full bodied beer. Earthy and woody notes. Well balanced beer. Drinkable. Very nice. chriso (4667), London, Greater London, England Jul 19, 2005 Deep tawny brown colour with a lasting, fluffy, beige head. I would have assumed that this was an abbey dubbel but what do I know. Quite a reserved beer if it is. The aroma isn’t very pronounced. Bits and pieces of caramel and wood. On the palate its dry, with some roasty malt, licorice and dried fruit but, again, its not very forthright. The mouthfeel is a bit chalky, with earthy and woody edges. Not very rich. Finishes distinctly bitter. Nothing wrong with it, but it doesn’t have enough presence to score higher. 2001 bottle (I think - best before date was 31 December 2004, so it might have been a bit past its best) frombeersofeurope.co.uk.
