Flavor is yeasty and sour with a dark maltiness. Very good. Palate is nice too, not too thick like the 12. bma4573 (136), Mechanicsville, Maryland, USA

A sweet carmely flavor but not overpowering. This is easily the best Belgian ale I’ve sampled. RedSox2004 (362), Pacific Palisades, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Dec 2, 2008 Poured deep cherry red, almost opaque, with a generous two-finger head that left a nice creamy film and excellent lacing. Malty aroma with dark fruit like raisins and plums. Same pleasant fruitiness is featured on the tongue, with some molasses, caramel and black pepper. Medium to full body, silky smooth mouthfeel, lively carbonation, and wonderful dark fruit aftertaste. blueye80 (1), USA does not count | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 12, 2008 The smell did not really reflect the taste. It was more bitter that it smelled. Still a really good brew. Sonicdescent (382), Donora, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 23, 2009 Poured from Bottle with a best by 10 xx xx date into a goblet.
Pours a murky brown with some floaties. Thick creamy head disappears into a lid with somewhat inconsistent lacing, sometimes thick, sometimes none at all.
Smells exceptional. Floral, sweet, fruity. Very similar to the Westy 8. If the flavor is even close to that, I have found my new go-to beer and a new favorite style.
Drumroll...it is similar! A nice sweetness but not cloying, with a taste mostly of grapes. A nice hint of bread and cola as well.
Mouthfeel is a tad more carbonated than the Westy, but the body is very good and light.
Drinkability..this is my new go to beer. It’s not nearly as difficult to find as the Westy of course, but still not extremely easy to come by here. RHeastings (444), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Nose is rich with dark fruits and high crystal (80-120) malts. The palate certainly does not disappoint, with wonderful notes of raison, silightly burnt candy, and a nice spritzy carbonation. The finish is a great blend of sweet and dry. crajun (101), , Texas, USA

hazy brown in color - fruity/malty aroma - really enjoyed the taste on this - a little toned down from the other beers; very smooth; no alcohol taste and carbonation/spiciness on the backend.. BroSpud (617), , Massachusetts, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 24, 2009 12oz bottle. $3.95 First off, I have to say that I am becoming a big fan of St Bernardus. One of my highest ratings so far has been given to their Apt 12. With this one I was not really expecting anything great based on the other reviews and the style but I was pleasantly surprised. I really like this. It has a nice creamy head that, like many other belgians, seems to be alive. Pours a nice brown color. Unlike many of the other belgians I have tried this one does not hit you over the head with alcohol taste making it very drinkable. Subtle flavorings of spice and fruit. Can’t wait to taste the other St Bernardus to see if this trend continues.
