jhumphries69 (656), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Dec 9, 2006 Pours cloudy and dark orangish brown with a thick tan head consisting of variously sized bubbles. The aroma is very fruity and syrupy smelling - like a fruit and molasses jam to spread over your pancakes. There is some alcohol and some yeast aroma, too. The flavor starts off with some caramel and chocolate, and then the fruit and molasses flavors hit the middle of the tongue. There is a distinct flavor of roasted grains towards the back of the mouth along with some hops - almost like a splash of porter in a glass of belgian ale. The mouthfeel is not very heavy and quite crisp with carbonation. The yeast, fruit, and other crazy flavors - despite being detectable - are quite muted overall (likely due to the low gravity of this brew compared to the other St. Bernardus beers). Overall, pleasant.
floydian1 (153), FNQ, Australia Jun 30, 2009 330ml bottle into chalice glass. A dark brown hazy beer with a medium off white head. Nose is fruity sweet nutty malts and light hops. The taste is similar with a caramel malty presence and a nice dry spicy hop finish. Thickish body for the ABV. Not bad at all. porterhouse (1098), Alna, Maine, USA Jun 28, 2009 (330 ml bottle (best before 4/16/10) from McKean and Charles) Pours cloudy brownish amber with a finger and a half of off-white head. Aroma of spice (cinnamon?), light candy-malt, brown sugar, fruit and some yeast. Mouthfeel soft, fairly smooth but a but fizzy. Lightly sticky on back end. Big, weepy rings of lacing that are well-retained. Flavor of light spice, cinnamon-like over light sweet candy-malt and fruit. The fruitiness is almost cherry-like. Hints of brown sugar and smoke. Very nice and refined although aroma and flavor could be a bit beefier. glennmastrange (687), hobe sound, Florida, USA Jun 24, 2009 Bottle. Moderate malt notes of cereal, cookie and nutty, light herbs and dough for the hops and yeast, with hints of cherry, red wine and brown sugar. Head is average size to start, fizzy, off-white, with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is red/brown, murky, then clears up to show some tiny particles. Flavor starts lighty sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic. Palate is medium, oily, with a carbonation that’s lively bordering on fizzy. A well rounded Belgian Ale that could easily be drunk a few at a time. Borup (1165), Albertslund, Denmark Jun 21, 2009 Bottle. Pour brown colour with a nice white head. Aroma and flavour of malt, fruit, hops and caramel. JPDIPSO (4654), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Jun 16, 2009 One of those, "I can’t believe I haven’t rated this one" brews. Hazed light brown color with a tall, bone colored head. Aromas of a trail mix, with nut and raisins. Light German chocolate and a bit of funky yeast. LIght fruit and caramel in the start. A light nut and rye notes in the middle. THe feel is a bit thin to me. Dry finish with a mild caramel and toasted nut bread linger. A Belgian amber, if there is such a thing. syton98 (18), USA Jun 15, 2009 A very nice surprize. I enjoyed this on the gold course one recent afternoon. A nice beer to enjoy as you chase a white ball around. Very heady and light to drink yet the after taste stays with you from drink to drink. I can’t wait to enjot this beer while sitting down to truely note the characteristics of this brew nqualls (1200), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jun 14, 2009 Source: 330 mL bottle purchased from McHugh’s in Dublin.
