illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Jan 26, 2008 Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip. The glass gives this beer’s exemplary and ample head plenty of room to stretch out to an impressive three fluffy fingers. The fine carbonation leaves lacing that cakes the glass as the head rescinds itself. The beer is an opaque dark brown that could be used to paint a UPS van.
The smell erupts with sweet doughy malts and dark fruits, classic dubbel aroma, very enticing.
Breadiness juxtaposed with fig, raisin, and plum esters caresses the tongue. A hint of spiciness, caramel, and candi sugar make this a sweet beer while a pinch of hop flavor and alcohol warmth fight for balance.
The mouthfeel is creamy, smooth, and medium-bodied, and the carbonation is perfect. Excellent drinkability. jfenglish (198), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 25, 2008 Bottle. No head, just some see-thru bubbles at the top. Dark brown, almost black. Sour, winey aroma, dried fruit & cherries. Wow, biting carbonation right away. Recall too much carbonation in the 6 too, whereas the 12 was nearly perfect. Not sure what’s going on, but it’s nearly impossible to get past the carbonation issue here, except for a weird bitterness right at the end. Arrgh! gmonroe10 (172), Netherlands Jan 25, 2008 Pour a dark brown and tan head. Solid carbonation and aroma lightly sweet and yeasty. Sweet bread aroma. Fantastic on first taste- very well balanced and not as much ’spice’ as i expected. Medium bodied but very nicely balanced with the carbonation to almost dissipate in the mouth. ’Weightlessness’ by another reviewer summed it up very well. Smooth and fantastic! At the end it was almost too smooth and not enough bite... SQNfan (591), Wheaton, Illinois, USA Jan 24, 2008 Brown in color this poured a fine thick head that slowly dissipated. It was darker than the 6 but the head also dissipated quicker. The nose was filled with chocolate covered bananas, raisen, cherry, burnt caramel, dates. In the mouth it was medium-bodied with a denisity to it that was kept light from all the very fine bubbles. While overall similar to the Pater 6, this clearly had a denser midpalate with more powerful flavors. There is still sense of weightlessness to the palate the belies its dark flavors. Overall, this was similar to the Pater 6 with more power and flavor concentration along with slightly darker fruits. mixinnixon2000 (227), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jan 22, 2008 Good Belgian strong. it is sweet and spicy at the same time. not as good as the 12 charlotte (1997), Vanlřse, Denmark Jan 19, 2008 Dark brown colour with large beige head. The aroma is spicey and hoppy really power full mouth feels, sweet note of strong alc. RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Jan 18, 2008 Pours a dark brown with a healthy head that stayed throughout.
Sweet, citrusy smell with some caramel aromas.
Great taste of dark fruit, black cherries, and malt with a touch of coffee.
Mouthfeel might be the best part of this beer with a silky smooth finish underneath very lively carbonation that felt like champagne.
My wife was drinking a Bud Light as I was drinking this one, so I took a sip of hers. The Prior 8 was better.
Funknmilla (577), Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 17, 2008 Updated: Jan 19, 2008Bottle...pours brown with red highlights....super fluffy tan head that shrinks down to a cm and leaves a very delicate and elegant lacing behind....the pour left a small concentrated dollop of creamy foam in the center of my glass-head stays around through the entire consumption....aromas of yeast and clove...prunes and raisins as well....as it opens up I smell faint raspberries and apples.....well carbonated body, small dense bubbles....A bitter malt flavor and fruits show through on the tongue...raisin and prune again...on the finish a bit of spices...like a bitter allspice or something....this beer seems to have many different levels, but they all blend so quickly together, good. gets better as you sip it...but leave it out for more than an hour and too much alcohol comes through and the finish is a salty mouth-feel
