ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Jul 16, 2009 Tap at The Trappist. Having it not from a bottle was probably my first mistake. Though the aroma was a nice, robust malt, yeast, brown sugar, artificial grape flavor, the actual flavor was thin, almost grating, and shallow. Rather like the Westy 8 I had in bottle - just not very smooth, and rapidly finishing. esox (259), Oulu, Finland Jul 10, 2009 33 cl bottle. Dark brown and hazy beer. Rich head is blond, dense and very creamy. Sweet maltiness and spicy Bernadus yeast dominate the aroma. Toffy, candi sugar, winegums, peppery yeast and a hint of strawberries. Candi sugar, some alcohol and mild but herbal hoppiness in the finish. Big flavor is malty and quite sweet. Caramell, candi and mildly toasted and even chocolatey maltines. Finishes drier but it still has caramelly and alcoholic sweetness. The palate is powerful yet very drinkable. Medium body, alcoholic backbone and velvety texture. Once again, a brilliant beer from St. Bernardus. planky84 (99), , Greater London, England Jul 8, 2009 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a good creamy head. Aroma of dark sugars, toffee, blackberries. Tastes of chocolate, raisins, apples, spices. Good hoppy finish. ewpitts (13), , Iowa, USA Jul 8, 2009 Dark brown color that pours a long-lasting tan head. Spicy smell with a hint of chocolate. Surprisingly medium body for a beer with a thick head. Malty taste with a woody flavor- almost tastes as if it were aged in a whisky barrel. BroSpud (583), , Massachusetts, USA Jul 7, 2009 Large bottle. Once again, really good stuff. I have liked every style of St Bernadus so far. They all seem to be so alive. This one pours a murky brown with an excellent head that continually breathes and leaves a lacing all the way through. Excellent belgian ale. mkel07 (494), Brisbane, Australia Jun 29, 2009 330ml bottle. Coppery to brown in colour with a huge dense persistent light tan coloured head. Strong aroma with fruity esters and a peppery spice background. The aroma lures you in and entices you to have a sip.Very strong flavour with a big bold body and strong alcohol undercurrent. Feels soft and velvety in the mouth. Ryan82SM (231), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jun 27, 2009 Aroma of molasses, plum, currant and some chocolate. Appearance was murky and brown with thin head. Flavor had some sour apple, caramel, molasses and a heaping of chocolate. Palate was lively and bubbly. Just a notch below the Abt 12 in my book. Borup (1345), Albertslund, Denmark Jun 21, 2009 Bottle. Unclear brown colour with a huge off-white head. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt, hops, chocolate and brown sugar.
