Overall: interesting drfabulous (1212), Columbia, Missouri, USA Feb 3, 2007 Rich. Malty. Have had on tap and in the bottle. While not the original recipe, still a Belgian favorite. marchcow (664), Coralville, Iowa, USA Feb 3, 2007 Updated: Jan 6, 2009Strong thick malty aroma. Tan frothy head with thick brown body, very impressive thickness to the head. Strong malty flavor as well. Well carbonated. Light bitter dried fruit accents. Good malt heavy beer with a decent duration. BrandonB (87), Denton, Texas, USA Feb 1, 2007 Bottle. Pours a hazy brown with a large fluffy off white head with nice lacing. A nice big of flavor and aroma of malt, dark fruits, yeast some faint hints of chocolate. A nice finish that is somewhat thick on the tongue. Cliff (355), Avon Lake, Ohio, USA Jan 29, 2007 Bottle, poures a hazy dark brown with a thick head. Nice aromas of malts, yeast, fruits, brown sugar. Very similar to the Pater 6. I wonder if they do the same as Rochefort and just make 3 strengths of the same beer? Either way, nice flavor, spicy yeast that marries with the rich maltiness and flavors of dried fruits. Wonderful mouthfeel and a lingering finish. Very nice beer. TheGrandMaster (1846), Auckland, New Zealand Jan 28, 2007 Draught at The White Horse on Parsons Green (London), a deep colour with ruby tints and a creamy off-white head. A subtle nutty aroma, not quite what I was expecting. Full bodied, with an alcohol presense and both chocolate and coffee flavours. Good. DruncanVeasey (2690), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Jan 26, 2007 Updated: Apr 23, 2008Boozy, raisiny, brandyish snout. Smoothly roasty malt and creamy liquorice. Possibly a wisp of smokiness. Imparts a metallic sensation on the tongue. Mildly Marmite-yeasty, underwhelming at first, but becoming increasingly complex as it warms. Smoky, smooth, yeasty and malty. And that’s enough for me.
(re-rate, 23/04/08, previously 7/3/8/4/16) Heady nose of booze, chewy dried fruit, sticky prune, Westy8 nuttiness and choc, a pinch of aniseed. Alcohol big and glowy, but smoothed out with berry fruit, currant, liquorice, peaty malt. Late savoury breadiness (smudged with Marmite), again like the dark Westies, but without the hop spike on the end. An eggcup of Everards Original (?).Tasty ale, a touch too sweet and alcohol-accented to break my top...91. faroeviking (6016), Republica Vikingo de las, Faroe Islands Jan 22, 2007 Bottle. Dark brown colour with a nice big long lasting light brown head. Medium roasted maltiness in the aroma, moderate caramel, dark fruits and yeast. Flavour is smooth with a bready like maltiness, good fruitiness, caramel, plums and raisins, bit of alcohol, some hops. Sweet malty bit dry finish. Great tasting beer.
