It is superfluous for me to add anything to the litany of praise for this beer, but superfluous I must be. 750ml cork-finished bottle six months past date (no problem for a beer of this giant caliber, I’ve been cellaring it just to see how great these become with time’s inscrutable passage). As wonderful as all the yuletide beer releases are, there’s really no reason to look further than Prior 8, if you want to taste Noel in a bottle. A nose packed with stewed fragrances ranging from fruity through spicy and bready to things like the pleasant body odor one might find on a love interest. The taste reflects, with great balance, depth, and persistence, the nose. What I’d most like to convey is the drunk-vs-drinkability factor which is off the charts. Pop a 750ml, drink it in 45 minutes, and crash around your chosen scene in a state of warm jolliness.

Bottle. Pours a deep auburn red with a medium, large-bubbled, beige head. Aroma is marzipan yeast, dark fruit, light green apple, dried dark fruit. Taste is marzipan, dark ripe fruits. Semi sweet with a herbal finish. Fairly full, low carbonation.

Pours deep chestnut brown and bubbly with a foamy off-white head that fades quickly to a ring and coating. Aroma is nutty, some mild darkfruit, earth and yeast. Taste largely follows - earthy malted grains and light flavors of plum and cherry. Quite fizzy and more yeast and grain than sweetness. Nicely balanced, but less complexity of flavor than some other Belgian greats. Alcohol is hidden pretty well.

Bottle. Pours a deep red-brown with a high, light ecru, blown-insulation head. (Seriously, this head looks, like you could WALK on it. Nose is wheat bread dough, dark fruit, spice -- wait -- Irish soda bread? Yeah. Like that. Heavy and smoky on the tongue, with boozy and tawny Port notes; it doesn’t, however, manage to overpower, providing an interesting balancing act. Finish is long, warm, and flavorful. Delicious.

11.2 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured reddish dark brown, big foamy off white head and lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malts, the typical Belgian yeast and fruits. Taste is of malts, dark fruit and yeast; alcohol is pretty well hidden. Very good beer, highly enjoyable.

HoopsandHops (32) - ISRAEL - APR 12, 2015
Pours an opaque dark red -- color really only visible against the light. Three fingers of dense, packed foam that’s slow to settle and settles unevenly. Aroma is super rich dark fruits -- fig, prune, raisin, cherry, silan. Taste is sweet up front, same dark fruits, hints of toffee, with some sourness on the back. Delicious. Copious lacing, medium body, active carbonation.
