jhumphries69 (656), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Dec 9, 2006 Pours very dark with hints of brownish orange shining through. It pours with a medium sized tan head that fades relatively quickly, but not completely. The aroma has caramel and malts along with some soft fruits (apricot, banana). The aroma has also hints of toffee and distinct smell of alcohol. The flavor at the beginning follows the aroma, but with much more malt and caramel than fruit. Flavors of raisin bread, bitter hops, and dark fruit (plums) reveal themselves on the middle of the tongue. The beer finishes somewhat dry and bittersweet (some roasted grain flavors showing through in the end) with virtually no after-taste. The finish also has some alcohol warming the throat as you swallow. The mouthfeel is splendid - quite creamy and light - particularly light for such a strong beer.
mkel07 (291), Brisbane, Australia Jun 29, 2009 330ml bottle. Coppery to brown in colour with a huge dense persistent light tan coloured head. Strong aroma with fruity esters and a peppery spice background. The aroma lures you in and entices you to have a sip.Very strong flavour with a big bold body and strong alcohol undercurrent. Feels soft and velvety in the mouth. Ryan82SM (154), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jun 27, 2009 Aroma of molasses, plum, currant and some chocolate. Appearance was murky and brown with thin head. Flavor had some sour apple, caramel, molasses and a heaping of chocolate. Palate was lively and bubbly. Just a notch below the Abt 12 in my book. Borup (1165), Albertslund, Denmark Jun 21, 2009 Bottle. Unclear brown colour with a huge off-white head. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt, hops, chocolate and brown sugar. Davros (103), Australia Jun 20, 2009 Garnet pour with large off-white head. Fair amount of yeast chucks floating around.
Aroma is full of dark caramel malts, candi sugar and hints of spices. Rather sweet. As it warms up cloves and chocolate note become apparent.
Flavours are mostly dark malts (sweet, toasty), sweet candi sugar and a hint of noble hops. Sharp alcohol presence is quite strong.
Slick mouthfeel, good high carbonation but it does feel slightly watery. VonkBrewer (12), Belgium Jun 18, 2009 Lovely brown beer. Little bit Fruity taste. Not a really extended taste but still very good. Gypsy19 (464), Sacramento County, California, USA Jun 16, 2009 Pours a cloudy, chunky brown with a thick creamy head; Pretty much looks just like the 12 and Tripel. aroma is very malty, with honey, toffee, caramel. Smells very nice, promising great flavor to come. Ooh, very nice: Sweet brown sugar, huge malts, slightly bitter with a pretty distinct floral flavor at the end. Alcohol is just barely present. Mouthfeel is creamy. Very smooth flavor and palate. Soft, velvety I might call it. Just very classy and very "Bernardus". Overall, excellent to world-class. Cirrhosis (550), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 16, 2009 Murky grayish brown body with a small cap and chunks floating everywhere, a good swirl replenishes the head. I got to say beer looks unpleasant. Aroma is sour, with wood, alcohol, pepper berry, and gum that’s been chewed way to long. Aroma is nothing special but complex. Taste is surprisingly light. Roasted malts, some alcohol, spicy but not too much. Mouth feel is kind of watery but still full. Just hit some vanilla and toffee. Brew comes across very dry. Ok beer I guess but there are other far superior in the style. turbothy (687), Bonn, Germany Jun 7, 2009 Pours deep mahogany brown with a finger’s width of light brown head. Nutty aroma. Sweet, malty raisin flavour - very good beer.
