bonfunck (149), Waasmunster, Belgium Jun 17, 2009 33cl bottle from Hopduvel in Ghent, Hazy gold yellow beer, strong taste as it should be for a triple, rich flavour with good after-taste, Vertical Bacon Strips (874), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 14, 2009 Very hazy and I can’t decide between brown, orange or yellow....lets just say weak metamucil...probally from all the sediment i swirled into the glass. Poured out a huge off white head that didn’t last really long but has a good surface cover retention throughout. Lots of concrete-like messy lacing and a cloudy film from every swirl. The aroma is very nice and soft, which is probally what wins me over on this tripel. After the pour the smell consisted of a nice soft spice, some mild yeast and a lingering scent that could only remind me of weak rootbeer. That all fades and turns into a fruity aroma - mostly pear, slight spice, some noticable malts and some background dampness. Brew goes down really soft and smooth, meduim bodied and leaves a great aftertaste consisting of sourness, dryness and lingering yeast. The bitterness hits hard like it should and then fades out nicely. I must note at this point that my beer has been in the glass for well over 45 minutes - thanks Aqua Teen Hunger Force for distracting me : . Taste is really good. Seems complex while remaining soft at the same time. Plenty of yeast and mild clovish flavour. Dry mouth!!!! Fruits come around as banana and something else. Somewhat musty, but that seems to me to be tied in with the yeast. Bitterness is really hitting harder now that I’m at the bottom of my glass...interesting brew - I keep changing my mind on what kind of score to give this....I’m not sure if I am gassy, bloated or if I ate too many McCain Spicy Wedge Superfries.
KyotoLefty (1370), Kyoto, Japan Jun 14, 2009 Thick dark golden color with a lacey head and floaters. Aroma of honey, spices, peaches. Sweet honey flavor with caramel and spice. Very fruity, with a rather thick body. Decent hop in the finish, with molasses-like sweet malts and alcohol heat. Rich, hearty and flavorful. Slightly too sweet for me, but complexity makes up for it.
Pawola22 (676), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Jun 12, 2009 On tap at the Flying Saucer in KC. Pours a cloudy, yellow orange body with a finger-width, white, quickly dissipating head that leaves lots of soft lacing. Aroma of floral tropical fruits. Mild yeast and banana bread with just a hint of spices. More raisin and caramel comes in as this warms. Flavor is more bready and caramel influenced than the aroma hints at. Very soft. Still has some tropical fruits, but more of a raisin. Finishes with mild caramels, yeast, raisin, toffee cake, and an even mix of banana and tropical citrus. Some soft spices dry this out. Not a lot of aftertaste, just a light fruity cloying malt. Medium bodied and very smooth. Overall, a decent tripel. Mild, complex, and flavorful, but too soft...which makes for a nice body and balance, but pretty average. det2nj (31), Newark, New Jersey, USA Jun 10, 2009 dark gold with massive white head. great fruity aroma that becomes a bit more yeasty as it warms. excellent mouthfeel, hardly any sensing of the alcohol. Enjoyable flavor of tart fruit and spice-- like banana great almost, as was mentioned below. Cirrhosis (607), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jun 8, 2009 Beer pours a slight cloudy beige, a tinge of orange comes shinning through when the light hits it just right, a quarter inch noisy white head capped off the brew that left behind some nice sticky lacing, there small floaters everywhere in the body. Aroma is apple juice with strong alcohol presence, wheat can be detected but alcohol dominates this sharp smelling beer. Sharp yeast and very noticeable alcohol comprise most of the taste , the alcohol seems way stronger than the 8% that’s actually in it. The warmer the brew got the smoother it got and more darker bitter tasting malt flavors came out. The brew is one you can’t slam back more of a sipping brew, taste way more harsh then most triples I’ve had, it made my stomach feel very warm and I guess was disappointing compared to most of this style. daleharshman (181), San Diego, California, USA Jun 3, 2009 11.2 ounce bottle from Mission Valley Bevmo (San Diego, CA). Pours a cloudy light amber color with a big thick white head that has a lot of staying power. Aroma of yeast, light spice, and some light citrus (lemon/orange). Tastes of yeast and lightly sweet malts accented by spice and some fruitiness. Finish is dry and has just a bit of tartness that is quite pleasant. Not outstanding, but still a very good "standard" tripel. fidel (882), Livermore, California, USA May 30, 2009 Poured hazy orangish golden, smooth, and clean, tropical fruits, little yeasty, little spicey, little caramel.
