330ml bottle.
Pours a beautiful deep copper, with an off-white head.
Malty, lightly roasted aroma, caramel, toffee, chocolate, hops, yeast, chestnut, light diacetyl.
Off-dry, medium body and bitterness, balanced CO2.
Malty taste, caramel, chocolate, fudge, hops, ashes, licorice, yeast, earth.
Slightly thin on the palate, with a very faint acidic touch. Ends a bit rough. Not bad, but lacks a little in overall balance. (2012-12-06)
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 fiulijn (12179) - Malmö, DENMARK - NOV 21, 2012
Dark brown color. It has an interesting aroma of cereals, malt, sugar, light wood and very light smoke. Round mouthfeel; very good caramel flavor, with hints of roasted malts, toasted wood; it has correct bitterness. Not an Oktoberfest, just a very good beer.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 ElDesmadre (936) - Mikołów, POLAND - NOV 2, 2012
Bottle from a trade with Cunningham. Marzen, eh? The American hoppy version, it seems. Aroma is citrus, floral, grapefruit and some resin, with a toasted, caramelly, slightly nutty base. Body less robust than in a classic marzen, flavour is a skillful blend of dark(er) malts and assertive US-hops. The mouthfeel is velvety and the finish grapefruity and very bitter. Sort of a bottom-fermented amber ale, I doubt it would succeed at the Oktoberfest. But it did with me.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Svesse (5197) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - OCT 28, 2012
(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 29 Sep 2012) Reddish brown colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of crisp-bread, dark fruit and caramel. Malty, roasted taste with dark bread, coffee, ryvita, dark fruit and a mild, spicy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. More like a vienna than a märzen. Decent, but not impressive.
