St. Feuillen’s centuries old brewing traditions combine with Green Flash Brewing Company’s cutting edge brewing techniques to form our first collaborative brew: Bière De L’Amitié (Friendship Brew). A blond Belgian collaboration ale, brewed with St. Feuillen’s traditional yeast and spices. For a modern twist, we add rye malt, wheat malt, and American Amarillo hops. At the crossroads of collaboration, we dry-hopped the brew for more zest. It’s old-world Belgian Abbey-style meets new-world American craft brewing - and a friendship is formed.

Bottle, gave a loud pop! when the cork was removed, has a clear medium gold pour with some orange and yellow colors, made a huge white fluffy, creamy head five fingers high that stood in the glass, there was tons of effervescence in this beer, bubbles everywhere, and lots of sticky, bubbly lacing on the glass as I drank, there were aromas of light bread and pale malt, yeast, soft, mild fruit fragrances of Orange, Lemon and Pear, a hint of Banana and faint floral scents, with flavors of bready malt, light fruit – Pear and Lemon with citrus, the finish is drying and has pepper with a touch of gentle herbs at the end, there is some alcohol warming on the palate, and it does not grow as the beer warms which is a good thing, mouth feel is light and creamy, a nice Belgian Strong Golden ale.

On tap at O’Brien’s in San Diego. Hazy golden yellow with effervescent head. All the proper things a Belgian/Saison should be. Iam actually suprised to see it listed as a Belgian strong. Lots of lovely light spiciness, high citrus, and hay. Bright clean finish, with citrus/lemon and almost a white pepper effect. Lovely.

On tap at Ashley’s Ann Arbor. Pours a lightly hazed golden with a white head. Great yeasty aroma with abundant bubble gum and cloves. Again the yeast stands out very nicely in the flavor, with bubble gum leading cloves, and definitely mixing with some citrusy hops. A very tasty beer with a great yeast profile.

UPDATED: JAN 4, 2013 Let the beer warm up gentlemen. Wow! Killer aroma. Aroma and flavor really bloom as it warms. Very elegant. Flowery perfume with spicy hops. Golden Champagne like. Amazing. Really pleases the Siason hophead in me. Marriage made in heaven. I hope they do more beers together. Strong flavors and aromas from both brewers. Radical!

Bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar: The cork popped like a cannon. Hazy peach color with a billowing bright head. Aroma is floral, spice and citrus. Flavor starts lightly sweet and fruity with a peppery bite followed by zesty lemon and corriander and a bubbly dry finish. Medium body has lively carbonation.

BB 04-12. The pour is a hazy, straw color with a full, white, fizzy, rocky head which settles to a fluffy layer and leaves loose, sporadic lace. The nose interesting with a nice mesh of Belgian yeast and American hops; honeyed bread, lemon peel matching wheat tartness, floral, peppery alcohol matching spicy rye, a touch of white grapefruit, some resins, and some rosemary. The flavor is similar but citrus is more prominent, still lots of honeyed bread, spicy rye, orange and lemon peel, tart wheat, citrus notes somewhere between orange and white grapefruit, just hints of floral and the rosemary. The palate is fitting with a lively to fizzy carbonation, moderately full body, a creamy body, warming sensation, and the carbonation adding a seeming dryness. The finish is long with the carbonation drying it out, citrus notes throughout, honeyed rye bread dissipating, rosemary left on the tongue and a less than moderate bitterness. An interesting brew to take such a light colored Belgian and add lots of hops without adding a bunch of bitterness. The spicy rye notes masked the ABV well, the tartness from the wheat meshed well with the citrus. Amarillo hops seem to compliment Belgian yeast strains well for what ever reason. From two breweries for which I have mixed feeling for, they collaborated to make a very nice beer.

I like rye, so I was pleased to taste it peeking out from thid very complex collboration. Hops are strong, The Belgian spices are present. The mix of malts is fun and then another wave of hops takes you home to a clean crisp, spicy finish.
