3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Straw color with a very full, fluffy near white head. Continuance of small bubbles flow and keep the head in place. Heavy sheet of lace as it sets. Pale malt, currants, and key lime aromas. Light and airy in feel. Light pale malt and wheat start. Some citric hops work their way in. Floral hops flavors gradually gain dominance as does some of the yeast characteristics. Yeast is simple and only slightly spicy. Sweetness follows throughout the quaff. A golden ale with an attitude. 5/10

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
I usually enjoy brewery collaborations, though it’s rare I see Americans and Belgians doing the collaborating. In the case of Bière De L’Amitié I was especially excited since it’s made by Green Flash Brewing of California and St. Feuillien of Belgium – which brewery would have the greater influence? I can safely say it was actually the latter, as the beer is classic Belgian in most aspects but does have plenty of unique features to it. None that I would categorize as American per se, but I appreciate the innovativeness.
I poured a 750ml corked and caged bottle into a tulip glass. It was bottle on 2/25/15 and cost $2.99 (marked down from $12.99) ($0.12 per ounce).
Appearance: Bright orange hue with plenty of haze, though spastic carbonation is clearly visible. Pours to a huge, fluffy, white head, which retains fine but doesn’t actually lace the glass.
Smell: Light and fruity with notes of orangepeel, some spice rack seasonings, and classic Belgian yeast esters.
Taste: There’s a lot going on in this palette; so much that it’s difficult to document it all but I’ll try. Right away I get a lot of Belgian malt character: slightly sweet pale maltiness coupled with an orange sherbet flavor. Banana, thyme, lime peel, rye, and pink peppercorn are all quite prominent throughout the middle of the swig. It finishes with a remarkable sweet flavor of caramel or toffee. I liken it to that of Cracker Jack or any kind of caramel popcorn. In fact, I may even get a bit of chocolate or toasted character in here.
Drinkability: I was hesitant to drink the entire bottle solo considering it’s 9.5% ABV, which is not something you throw back for kicks. Still, Bière De L’Amitié was remarkably drinkable for such a big bodied brew. True, the mouthfeel is quite lively and it’s challenging to drink more than a few sips at a time, and there is noticeable alcohol warmth. Still, it leaves a clean aftertaste and it might even be refreshing for a moment or two while in the mouth. I’m sure this would complement poultry and fish dishes with ease, but I recommend drinking it by itself to really enjoy and appreciate it for the brewing accomplishment that it is.

Pours a half finger of head on a hazy light straw body.
The aroma is bright, initially grapefruit, then mango and pineapple and some candy.
The taste is candy sweet, lemon drops and mild bitter finish.
The texture is light and airy.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Caged and Corked. A bit fuzzy, a medium well saturated yellow. Nice retention, thin amount of white head. Lots of stuff springing out of the nose, wow. I detect rye, bubblegum, lemon, and coriander notes. Taste is very spicy with the coriander out front, then the bubblegum, then a very dry finish. Nice.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rated on 5-13-2013 (Corked and caged bottle) This beer’s appearance is a huge smooth white head with a long retention, hazy pale yellow body, slow rising carbonation, and one ring of lacing. The aroma is lemon, herbal hops, yeast, wheat, malt, spicy, and hint of pepper. The flavor is sweet, wheat, spicy, peppery, malt, and hops in the background. The mouthfeel is zesty and this beer is light-medium bodied. This beer is very quaffable and has a lot going on in the aroma and flavor. It is very good tasting, worth trying and a beer I will drink again if it comes my way.

Bottle at James’ house for the End of History tasting. Pours a clear gold with a thin white head. Soft musk on the nose, a touch of hops, yeast. Medium bodied, soft sweetness, musk. Vibrant carbonation, fruity into the finish with more lingering yeast and a touch of warming alcohol.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled at the End of History tasting. Aromas are zesty lemon, lemon grass, and biscuit. Pours pale with light lacing and good carb. Taste is dulled lemon zest, floral/lemon grass, and a hint of rye. Light and easy in the mouth with a warm malt feel but no detectable gravity. This is dangerously easy to gulp. Well done.
