On tap at Ris Ras Filongongong, Aarhus, August 2006. Chestnut brown colour. Served way too cold, which effectively stifled the aroma and I was a bit too thirsty to nurse it until it had warmed sufficiently to display its wares. Lots of pruney fruit and fat caramel malt on the palate, with touches of liquorice. Not too sweet, with some tart notes on the finish which resulted in a relatively easy drinking beer for the strength and style. Decent but I didn’t really find anything to lift it into the realms of excellence. Perhaps the bottle I have at home will convince me otherwise when I open it.

750 ml corked bottle with the weirdest cage I’ve ever seen. It has a metal strip that goes across the middle of the cork and keeps it buckled down.
Appears a hazy brown amber with a small light tan head that fades into a fizzy cap. Scattered lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of brown sugar, caramel, spicy Belgian yeast, cream, vanilla.
Taste is of the same aromas with some earthy, spiced notes.
Mouthfeel is smooth, sugary, and cakey.
I refilled a few times on this one. Nice and enjoyable.

Bottle. Copper brown color with a small off-white head. Malty, bready, yeasty aroma with mild alcohol notes. Starts sweet and ends sweeter, with a smooth full body.

Reddish brown, clear, with ample light colored brown head. Smells of fresh baked bread, cloves, and cinnamon. Sweet and acidic with a long lasting malt finish.

Bottle, a gleaming dark ruby red with a bubbly beige head (that dissipated quickly). A warm and rich malty aroma and touches of yeast. Rich malty flavour again with peppery notes towards the finish. Quite a bit of carbonation in the mouth, with a sour tangy finish. Not as good as the Blonde.

Bottle (330ml). Via trade with mouton_noire. Murky deep chestnut, large creamy tan head with a lovely thick lace. Sharp peppery yeast, sweet malt, bitter and lactic. Taste is a nice sour malt tang, bitter alcohol in the finish, lightly spiced, improves dramatically as it warms. Average body, nicely lively and complex mouthfeel, slightly sour aftertaste, pretty good.

One of the least impressive Belgian’s I’ve had... rated at a 3.7. Not too bad for an average brew. Take the commercial description and wind it down some and you have this one. One of the weaker Belgian’s I’ve experienced... Chimay and Unibroue supplies more, but definately true...
