St-Feuillien’s Saison is what the Belgians call a beer of the terroir, a traditional farmhouse ale with all the rich savour of the fertile land of southern Belgium. Saison, a warm golden blonde beer, is a top-fermented classique. Thanks to secondary fermentation in the bottle, Saison has an unmistakable flavour full of rich nuances and a slight tang.Judge for yourself. 750s and 20L kegs only. In first instance, for export to the USA only.

So nuplastikk brought this CAN to a tasting. A frickin’ saison in a can. Yeah! - Pours lightly hazy amber with a thin white head. Nose is pear, honey, pale malt, and light spicing. Tastes fruity, a bit sweeter than I want with honey, pale malt, spicing, and mineral. Thin and well-carbonated. Decent stuff.

33cl 4packs and 3x75cl bottles over spring and summer. Pours a lucid Weizen orange with big Belgian foamy head. Aromas and taste verging also toward an atypical Weizen-fruitiness: banana, apricot compote, marnelade sugars - due to sugar and (shocked to find this on the label) ! Vitamin C. Peppery hop presence is there in the aftertaste, but by then the damage is done to what could have been a decent saison: heavy yeast-dominated (OK), somewhat sticky sugary palate and a tripel-style laden fruitiness make this far less refreshing than I’d hoped this saison would be. If Wallonian breweries are going to revive this style as they seem to (Lefebvre, Géants) why not brew it in a more modern, slicker version, not catering to the already oversugared 80s-90s Belgian palate? bit of a pity and waste of great ingredients and a wonderful simple style.

Bottle (33cl) from Vinmonopolet, Oslo. Hazy, orange/amber colour. Two-inch white, rocky, cracking, head, good retention - sticks to the glass. Fruity and spicy aroma, ripe apples/pears, banana, coriander, hint of pepper. Medium body, lively carbonation. Semi-sweet ’deep’ fruity taste with peppery notes, slightly salty, mildly acidic, low bitterness. Fruity-spicy aftertaste.

Pours a golden yellow color, with a tart aroma. Taste is a little fruit and tart flavor which quickly dissipates. A slight bitterness on the palate but overall a decent saison.

Small bottle. Cloudy golden body with a tall head. Aroma has Belgian yeast and some sweet malts. Simple but refreshing taste of citric hops and light yeast. Wheaty. Alcohol becomes apparent in the finish. Nice but not really memorable.

Coloração mel acastanhado, turva, com creme de baixa densidade mas boa persistência. Boa carbonatação. Aromas malte, caramelo, fermento. Sabor caramelo, malte, uva passa, leve lúpulo, leve condimento, talvez com leves notas cítricas. Corpo denso e muito equilibrada. Muito boa! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

An excellent ale! It has a caramel aroma with an airy head. There is a rosy, wine sensibility to it. You can also sense the earth it’s from at wash down. Smooth, not bitter. A classic brew meant to be drunk over casual conversation. Or with a friend while your turntable is playing.

33cL Can! Light pear and white fig aroma. Flavors are clean and bright, with silky esters and sweetness up front. The back end moves into an herbal, juicy bitterness that is nicely balancing. It’s a tiny bit flabby on the whole, but the yeast character is really nice and the can presentation worked really well. Fun. Will appreciate having this on the beach.

UPDATED: JUN 30, 2013 Appearance: Cloudy amber, no head. Aroma: Hint of fresh strawberry, orange, peppery, balsamic tang, tomato vine, slightly vinous/cognac/verging on chemical, note of hay, leather/musky/barnyard,hint of coriander, a little earthy, slightly mineral. Taste: Low sweetness, medium bitterness, medium tartness, coriander. Palate: No carbonation, spicy astringent lingering finish, medium body, medium texture, a little warming. Comments: Certainly not as good as other saisons. Not sure if I had a dud bottle? No glass lace.
