COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
St. George American Brown Ale is the typical American take on a classic English style. This beer exhibits an assertive American hop character overlying a malty richness which lends it a slightly sweet, toasty flavor and aroma. Dark brown in color with a thick tan head our American Brown Ale is a brewed from a full malt base and is well balanced by a spicy/citrusy hop bitterness.

Pours a deep brown chestnut with a bunch of amber notes and a medium creamy bubbly tan head that left lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate, toasted malt, caramel, nuts, light citrus notes, vanilla and some dark fruits. Flavor of caramel, milk chocolate, toffee, toasted malt, nuts, light spicy hop character along with some citrus, vanilla and some hop bitterness. This may be my own opinion, but with American in the title I want to see more citrus floral hops in the nose and a touch more bitterness. Dont get me wrong the malt character in this beer is nice. The chocolate notes in the aroma and flavor are both really nice. So in the end...a really solid beer, just want more hops in my American Browns.

This was the best of the dragon six pack I got from them. Better than the rest, but not up to par. Pours brown with a soapy tan head. The aroma is dusty and dirty with some roasty / toasty aspects, basement mustiness and light coffee bitterness. Medium body that’s lightly slick with gentle carbonation. The flavor starts a bit watery with dark malt and light nuttiness. The finish has a bit of spice and a touch of butter. Fair. The thing that is amusing to me is I was sitting next to two people chatting at a bar, one of which being a rep for St. George - he was talking about the importance of quality in the beer. Seriously. The six pack I got was from a very reputable store that had only been open two weeks. Frustrating.

UPDATED: JAN 29, 2013 Bottle from a dragon pack from Whole Foods in Charlottesville. Pours dark brown with a big head, decent retention and good lacing. Sweet, fruity malt aroma. Big malt taste with hints of molasses. Hops are so subtle as to be almost unnoticeable. 5/4/7/4/12

Rerate 1/14/13, Draft at Beer Run. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized frothy light tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of nuts, caramel, earthy notes and honey. The taste is nuts, grain, caramel, toffee, herbal hops. Medium bodied. 7/4/6/3/12

From dkachur via trade. The pour was dark brown with attractive garnet highlights glowing on the edges. The head was off-white, almost one-finger tall and coughed up flecks of lacing. The aroma was brown sugar, light chocolate and roasted malt with faint hop bitterness. The flavor was chocolate, roasted malt, nutty, spicy and possibly even some hops on the finish. The mouthfeel was average and the finish was unremarkable. Good.

On draft at Retro’s Good Eats in Colonial Williamsburg. This is a hot dog joint which boasts a "Retro’s Draft Lager" on tap - the only beer they serve. The commercial description is: "Brewed to bring out the best taste of our all Black Angus beef hot dogs, by our friends at St. George’s Brewery" Turns out, it’s just the Brown Ale. Not that great as a stand alone beer, but in all fairness it does complement the hot dogs extremely well. Pours a clear coppery-brown with ample, sustainable light-tan head. Nose of malt and corn. Malty backbone with a nutty flavor and evident spicy hoppiness.

Pours like black coffee, a little read. Very flat head. Smells like nothing really, slight chocolate, dust. Taste is spicy hops, chocolate. Good for the style. There’s nothing misplaced about it. Nice dryness, toffee. Reminds of a thin Mackelson.

Bottle from Wine Cellar. Smooth nutty, roasted malt aroma. Dark brown color with ruby glints in the thin spots. Tan head that went up and ringed quickly. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Rich smooth dark roasted malt, with a bit of coffee and chocolate. Think there was some dark fruit before the coff and choc kicked in. There is a moderate amount of hop bitter, but the type is submerged in the c&c. Barring the bitter level, this is very like a porter in character. Tastes really good.

Pours a watery dark brown with big bubbles. Looks just like a cola in the glass. Nice malty, earthy aroma. Good flavor. Lots of chocolate, coffee, and some sweetness. A hint of fruit...prunes?! Thin mouthfeel for a beer this dark, but overall a good brew.
