Deep dark red brown with a coarse off-white head, aromas of chocolate, malt and a little coffee, slightly spicy body with a tart maltiness, red fruit notes and a faint black-treacley sweetness, then a bitter and dry-malty finish.

On cask at Great British Beer Festival, day 3 on 6 August 2009. Darkish mahogany / ruby colour. Sweet malts dominate. Quite fruity. Not a lot of hops in evidence. Not really my thing - I prefer the firmer, hoppy bitters to the sweeter fruity / malty ones.

Cask-conditioned at the Three Tuns, Bristol 3/03//2011. Dark brown with plenty of red undertones and a slight, off-white head. Sweetish, caramel and chocolate aroma with some berry fruit and grassy hops. Flavour was similar, sweet and fruity upfront, with some milk chocolate and some citrus hops in the bitter finish. Good.

Cask at Wellington Arms, Bedford. Very dark brown with a small off white head. Tame unidentifiable aroma. Autumn leaf perhaps? But that’ s deceptive. The taste is sour, cheesy and aggressive, like chewing splinters of a creosoted garden fence. Not a crowd pleaser, I’d say, but challenging and full of character.

Cask conditioned at The Old Contemtibles, Birmingham. Dark brown with white head. Quite a fruity, tart beer, bordering on an Old Ale, some treacle hint in the body with a slightly roasty note, then a cherry fruit taste. Some bitterness in the close. It’s ok.

Cask @ GBBF 2009. Pours a clear dark brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty caramel aroma with some hoppy hints and some hints of toffee. Slightly roasted malty fruity caramel flavor with some hoppy hints. Has a sweetish and slightly roasted malty caramel finish with some bitterness in the aftertaste.

Clear dark brown color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted. burnt, light hoppy.
