3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 SFLpunk (134) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - JAN 22, 2009
750mL green glass cork-finished. Cork date 04-2007. Poured in Moinette chalace.
Appearance: A white, very light but sudsy head, left no lacing. Color is mahogany to reddish brown. Fairly clear.
Nose: The classic red cherry (Luden’s cough drops) of a sweeter-style kriek. Not a lot of woodiness or nuttiness here. Hard to get much other than the cherries.
Palate: Light carbonation, moderately sweet, but the tartness creeps in on the finish. It is a sweet-tartness though, like a sour patch kid. Mouth-feel is nice, with a certain woody texture and some of the wheat comes across, mostly in texture, not as much in flavor. A lightly-toasted oak flavor is subtly present. When aggitated in the mouth, the finish is more classic kriek than
"other" mass-produced examples.
Notes: A half-step between the commercial and cloyingly sweet lambics (Lindeman’s) and the traditional, sour labics (Cantillon). A better introduction to what Lambics are than Lindeman’s and more user-friendly for those just starting into sour Belgian beers.
Other Notes: We tried this beer, at the request of the regional rep, next to a bottle of Lindeman’s Kriek. On the nose, the differences were subtle. The palate revealed the woody texture of St. Louis and the notes associated with oak-ageing, whereas the Lindeman’s was cloying, round, and had a slick, soda like mouth-feel. The finish of the St. Louis was stronger and more complex than the Lindeman’s. All in all, they’re not hugely different (half-step), but the quality of the St. Louis is such that the money is better spent with it and the lesson of oak-ageing is more obvious. I still prefer the Cantillon style to both though.

Back to Back with the peche, with some spicy lentils in between. Bottle. Pours dark red with a tan head. Nose is like cherry cough syrup. Taste is very sweet, and cloying with some tartness. Overall I like this less than the peche.

12.7 oz bottle, dated 11/2008. Clear red with a pink head. Sweet and strong maraschino cherry nose. Flavor is much the same, just a hint of tartness. Again, why is this rated so low? I liked it a lot.
3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 RCL (2025) - Waltham, Massachusetts, USA - OCT 9, 2008
Aroma does not bode too well; cherry cough syrup is the only thing that comes to mind. Flavor is OK, though. No funk at all, just sweet cherry syrup flavor. Mouthfeel is a bit, well, syrupy.
