COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In the small village of Meer, north of the city of Antwerp, there used to be an abbey which was famous for its beer named St. Paul. During the French Revolution, the abbey was destroyed and so it was said-one father named Paul, rescued the secret recipes to brew the abbey beer and trust them onto the local Sterkens family, at that time a renowned brewer family. The Sterkens family had been brewing beer since 1654, and their St. Paul abbey beer is still brewed today, respectfully according to the centuries old tradition.

Bought at De Bierloods/Zytholoog. Deep murky brown with a reddish tint and big beige head. Nose of refreshing hops with solid, slightly sweet caramel malts beneath. Taste is less hoppy but all the more pronounced (roasted?) caramel malts, striking a great balance between sweet and bitter. Strong taste considering it’s only 6.9% Pleasant mouthfeel with not a lot of carbonation, which fits well with this kind of beer. Very good introduction for me to the Sterkens brews, will definitely try out several of their other beers (St. Paul Tripel & various St. Sebastiaans).

Nice bottle. Poors clear dark brown with a bubbling light brown head. Great sweet fruity yeast aroma with sleight vinouse notes. Wellbalanced sweet alcho flavors giving you that feel of a nice solid belgian double. Maybe abit overcarbonated, other than that its great

Metalchopz (1173) - Quebec, CANADA - SEP 30, 2010
Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontario (March 2006). This dubbel pours a deep red colour with slight orange. The head is tanned with decent retention and nice foam lacing that stays. Flaky sediments are all over the brew. Aromas of dark fruits and quite nutty. Same for the flavours, nutty throughout with light notes of chocolat malt and a slight taste of smoke and oak wook in the aftertaste. Thin-bodied with some light tart on the tongue. A very well-balanced and light dubbel that is quite refreshing.

Bottle at home. Deep dark brown pout with a thick foamy off-white head. Aroma is dark fruits, autumn leaves, earthy, some dark malts, caramel and sugar. Flavor is bitter and slightly sweet with roasted malts, caramel and some dark fruits. Creamy texture and lively carbonation. Very nice brew.

Countbeer (1686) - Best of Eindhoven ohne Brauhaus, NETHERLANDS - JUN 15, 2010
Bottle: Small light beige foamy head. Dark amber brown color. Smell a mix of spices, hops, alcohol and dark fruits. Taste is pretty full but not big. Taste spices, malts, hops, hint of ginger bread. Also hint of alcohol and a very warm palate, might be the alcohol. Overall this St. Paul is way better than the special version!
