2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
330ml long-neck bottle bought at Belgian Beer International in Tsuen Wan.
Cloudy hazy dark amber brown colour with traces of dirt-like yeast sediments; Three-quarter finger head with crumpety beige foams which lasts for 1 minute; Small sticky lacing and fizzy carbonation; Fragrant sweet aroma of roasted malt, with banana, vanilla, strong caramel, toffee brown sugar, light creamed coffee, Bel yeast and faint grass; Mid to light sweet taste of roasted malt, with strong metallic, light sourness, light nuts, toffee, molasses, creamed coffee, notes of red fruits, Bel yeast, lemon and very light bitter grassy hops; Mid to light body. Slick and slightly creamy palate; Mouth feel is an enhanced version of St. Paul Speciale -
slighty thin body, malt is more roasty with prominent taste of toffee and caramel. Not really sweet, booze is well hidden. ester is slightly more fruity, and more Bel yeast. Like the Speciale, the initial metallic and sour notes were strong but gone pretty quickly with fyrther sips. Simple and easy… Hoppiness is faint grass nose, lemon and light grass in taste. Bitterness is very low, mostly malty finish; Slightly dry after taste. Quite easy to mouth.
Comments: This sure tastes richer than the basic Speciale, but the end result is a mix bag: initial metallic and sour notes are strong as ever, body is thinner, better estery aroma, good creamed coffee taste, and lesser hoppiness. An easy-going simpleton just like the Speciale, but if you are looking for more fruitiness and hops in a Dubbel, better look elsewhere.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle at home. Deep, russet red colour with a good lacy head. Once the lively carbonation has subsided the beers character shines through. Malty, fruit aroma leads to a smooth, creamy malt, caramel toffee flavour with a good balance of sweetness. Not to heavy for summer drinking.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle. Pours clear dark copper brown with airy but stable light tan head. Clear aroma of fruit, malt and caramel. Sweetish flavour of caramel malt, interspersed by bitter notes of hops, alcohol and metal. Creamy mouthfeel. Sweetish finish with a rough touch and mild, metallic hints. Warming alcohol presence. OK but would better without the metal.

Bottle beers of europe. Chocolate and cherry aroma, with rich fruit and spices, some nutmeg and yeast notes. Possibly could do with a bit more body as it gets a little thin towards the end.

Gedronken in de Demervallei. Verschijning: roet zwart van kleur, beperkte schuimkraag. Neus: kruidig, gras, malty. Afdronk: heeft iets zurigs, wat CO2, prikkelend, iets pittig. Hooi, fris en gebalanceerd. Speciaal biertje, maar wel lekker.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle 33 cl. Pours brown in color with a small tan head. A bit of nuttyness, dark ripe fruits and brown sugary sweetness in aroma. Nice so far. Even a bit of some cocoa powder in aroma. Plums and a bit of raw cocoa beans in taste. Feels quite dark, which is nice. A bit carbonated perhaps and dry, but otherwise quite nice. A bit of sweetness in finish.
