Commercial Description:
In the small village of Meer, north of the city of Antwerp, there used to be an abbey which was famous for its beer named St. Paul. During the French Revolution, the abbey was destroyed and so it was said-one father named Paul, rescued the secret recipes to brew the abbey beer and trust them onto the local Sterkens family, at that time a renowned brewer family. The Sterkens family had been brewing beer since 1654, and their St. Paul abbey beer is still brewed today, respectfully according to the centuries old tradition.

I tried this beer on November 1, 2007 at "Smokeless Joe’s" in Toronto. The beer poured a dark reddish brown colour with a thick, fluffy, off-white head that lingers. The aroma was a compbination of malt, yeast, and subtle hops. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with mild carbonation. The flavour was yeasty with some malt in the background.

Bottled. Cloudy dark brown, small beige head. Caramelly nose. Sweet and lightly grassy with spritzy rounded mouthfeel. Medium bodied. Dominted by caramel but with obvious almondy yeast character and notes of orange. Some late resiny bitterness. Not the most remarkable Belgian ale.

Bottle from Cracked Kettle. Nice dark brown body. Nose of caramel and raisins. Sweet taste with darker fruits and jellies. Some malt and caramel notes. Strong alcohol taste as well. Quite watery and harsh finish.
