Two row spring barley from the south of England, a special strain of yeast, ice-age glacier water from the "Rotenburger Rinne," plus hops from the famous "Hallertau Hop Gardens" in southern Germany are the ingredients that give St. Pauli Girl Lager its unsurpassed quality and taste and keeps you coming back for more.

330ml bottle pours a pale golden color with a finger of white head that leaves a few specks of lacing. Aroma is cereal grains and grassy hops with a bit of skunk. Taste is cereal grain sweetness with some grassy hop bitterness and a skunkiness. A step up from the typical macro lager, this is quite a pleasant pilsner if you can get past the light skunkiness.

Test vom 4.1.2011, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 10,6,6,5,13,6 - 6,60

At the lower end of the German beer market, but this pils is still good for a few.

This beer tastes more like water than nearly ever other beer I’ve ever tried, and I’ve been through a variety of lagers - I’d put it above Busch Light or Michelob Ultra, but not Miller or Bud, honestly. In fact, upon first sip, there is virtually no flavor; you have to wait about ten seconds before some minor aftertase kicks in, and it isn’t much. Even worse, this beer has an absolutely skunky smell when you first open it, sort of like Heineken; the green bottle doesn’t help. The alcohol content is 4.9%, though you’d think it was about 2% with this kind of water flavor. Do not be fooled by its slightly elevated reputation - this really isn’t any better than most other macro light lagers.

Originally reviewed: 12/31/09. Big 24oz bottle poured into my pilsner glass. Labeled ’Lager’ in big letters. Pours a clear straw yellow with a thick white head on top. Retained very well; left some minor lace spots. Scents of cheap grains, lemon zest, and a light soapy scent. Body was thin and wet. Flavors of buttered bread and corn. This is what I expected it to be. Refreshing and slick, this is an easy drinker. There’s better lagers out there, no doubt, but this would be alright to drink with some grilled fare.

Bottle. Light golden, very small and fully diminishing head. Light to moderate, malty – lightly grainy and lightly sweetish aroma, some floral grassy hoppyness. Body is light to medium, malty – lightly grainy and lightly sweetish flavor with light grassy hoppyness. Finish is short to average, malty – grainy and lightly sweetish, light grassy hoppyness. Nice floral hoppyness in the aroma otherwise pretty standard pils.
