DerWeg (748), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 30, 2008 Flask from LCBO. Coffee and chocolate aromas prevail - semi translucent pour. Seems much higher-gravity than a typical plain stout, almost like an Imperial in some ways. It has a little more power and richness than I was expecting, while still having subtle nutty/toffee top notes on the finish (rather than the almost soya saucelike qualities of some Imperials.). It seems really well put together & fresh like it is unpasteurized. First class. kpresley77 (133), Jackson, Georgia, USA Oct 30, 2008 Bottle pours opaque black with thin tan head. Aroma is coffee. First taste is sweet and roasted malt. There is a slight cream flavor but roasted malt carries throughout the whole beer. The finish is clean and there is slight coffee aftertaste. Pretty good stout. MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Oct 29, 2008 Bottle from the LCBO- Deep opaque black pour is capped with a thin, but lingering layer of mocha froth. Milk chocolate in the nose leads to musty dark chocolate, some faint grassy hops, black coffee, with a lactic presence. Tastes of semi sweet dark chocolate, a lactic milky blast follows, leading to coffee, anise, and a decent hit of bittering hops. Creamy and bitter finish, with a nice lingering lactic aftertaste. A favourable beverage to ward off this particularly cold October evening. nwhicks (4), USA does not count Oct 27, 2008 I have been trying quite a few stouts lately and someone recommeded this one. Very dark pour - dark brown to black. It has a very creamy or soft feel in the mouth. Wonderful flavors of chocolate and coffee. Very good and I will be drinking this one again. EricE (446), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Oct 26, 2008 Thin opaque black pour with a light tan head. Very creamy aroma with lots of lactic acid, berries, chocolate. Fruity and almost wine like. Slightly sweet cream flavor followed up by intense bitterness highlighted by coffee grounds. Alcohol on the finish. Very smooth. JesseM (660), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Oct 26, 2008 500mL bottle from the LCBO. Pours a black yet still somehow translucent colour with a small brown head. The aroma is your typical good stout qualities, lots of mocha and chocolate. The flavour is really nice, very rich mocha, lots of bitterness balanced by the sweeter dark caramalt. Now that’s a stout! Great body and mouth-feel to it, the 6.5% abv is a very nice touch. Definitely a great beer for colder evenings. Evident hops as well which is something I don’t really get with most stouts, but is quite welcomed here. Not much like other ’cream’ stouts/porters I’ve had though, but still very well done. PMgep (71), Lund, Sweden Oct 24, 2008 [500 ml bottle from systembolaget] Wonderful aroma with dark rosted coffe and chokolate. The colour is nice and black with a brown head. Flavour is smooth and creamy with roasted coffe, chokolate and hops. probstk (1005), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Oct 23, 2008 500 ml bottle from LCBO, served cold in a tulip glass.
App.: Very dark brown-black, remnants of a greyish-light mocha head.
Aroma: Dark chocolate and black coffee (fairly dark roast), is it the name or is there a cream-like note?, a bit ashen, a touch of savoury, wee hints of brine and soy sauce.
Palate: Medium body, soft carbonation, smooth and silky with a slight astringent edge.
Flav.: The coffee and dark chocolate and joined by a grape-like taste, a creamy taste (the power of suggestion again), some ash and minerals, slight vanilla; feels substantial and full, leaves a dark black coffee finish that is slightly bitter and slightly tangy.
Certainly one of the better offerings from this brewery.
