probstk (1011), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Oct 23, 2008 500 ml bottle from LCBO, served cold in a tulip glass.
App.: Very dark brown-black, remnants of a greyish-light mocha head.
Aroma: Dark chocolate and black coffee (fairly dark roast), is it the name or is there a cream-like note?, a bit ashen, a touch of savoury, wee hints of brine and soy sauce.
Palate: Medium body, soft carbonation, smooth and silky with a slight astringent edge.
Flav.: The coffee and dark chocolate and joined by a grape-like taste, a creamy taste (the power of suggestion again), some ash and minerals, slight vanilla; feels substantial and full, leaves a dark black coffee finish that is slightly bitter and slightly tangy.
Certainly one of the better offerings from this brewery. Stew41 (1042), Caulfield, Australia Oct 22, 2008 Not a bad beer. Quite a heavy and full bodied mouthful but it suits the style really well. Dark bitter chocolates and a hint of RIS-like fruit cake on the nose. Good structure and intensity here. Lightens off in the mouth but both the fruitcake and chocolate notes hang around. Relatively dry finish and the hops certainly kicked in strongly for the style. One of the better stouts I’ve had for some time. matt7215 (943), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Oct 21, 2008 500 ml oval bottle from the LCBO. a damn nice looking bottle that ill be adding to my collection. served at cellar temp in my session mug. pours black with a small tan head. aromas of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. the aroma isnt bad or lacking in any way but is doesnt quite live up to the flavour. the flavour profile on this stout is awesome. you’re greeted with warming melted chocolate, which progresses into a smooth creamy mocha coffee middle and then you get a dose of hop and coffee bitterness. damn this is good stuff. ill be back to the LCBO to stock up for the winter months. pootzboy (1037), Hawgville, Ontario, Canada Oct 21, 2008 Updated: Nov 20, 2008500ml bottle:
Decants a deep black nectar into the glass. Small off white cap.
Aroma is glorious! Figs, cocoa, roasted coffee, toasted grain aromas light grass notes... stout aroma in spades.
Rich silky mouth feel, big roast malt and hop astringence ride along with toasty grains in the front...mid palate you get some complexity with some dried fruits, bitter cocoa, pipe tobacco, medicinal hops....finishes slow and wet with lots of bitter cocoa and metallic hops with a kiss of sweetness then a charred toast after taste... excellent example of a prime Burton-style stout.
VeloVampire (483), Parkdale, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 20, 2008 500 ml flask bottle - poured deepest black but when held to the light, some ruby shos at the edges. Small, bubbly, mocha head. Aromas of tar, roasted barley, espresso, and a bit of chocolate. A hint of sourness as well. In the mouth, the flavours are less distinct and act together as a whole. There is also a slightly astringent, bitter finish. Really opens up as it warms. Roasty, slight alcohol. A tad thin. Niceness. movezig (137), Pensacola, Florida, USA Oct 20, 2008 Only St. Peters ive had and I really liked it. Nice black pour offwhite head. Nose lots of roast. Raisins are heavily evident some coffee. Good cream stout. jhagmar (114), Gothenburg, Sweden Oct 18, 2008 50 cl bottle. Black with a large, frothy beige head leaving excellent lacing. Malty notes of coffee of chocolate, some raisins and apples. Sweetish taste with an averagely long bitter finish. Medium to full mouthfeel, soft carbonation, quite creamy. RCL (1444), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA Oct 17, 2008 Bottle. Vanilla cream aroma is surprising coming from the black pour with a beige head. Flavor is light chocolate with light hops but a nice mouthfeel.
