My first sample from this classic English brewery. From a stubby 50 cl bottle. Opaque black beer under a creamy, medium thick, light beige head largely consisting of minute bubbles. Aroma has more cookie dough than roastedness, almost like a Scotch; brown sugar, bayleaf, liquorice, iron, biscuit, freshly baked cake, raisins, chalk, Belgian chocolates having passed their best before date, subtle coffee powder appearing when it warms up a bit, tobacco, dried leaves. Malty taste profile; some candied fruit sweetness in the onset, dates and raisins, medium carbonation; then mostly caramelly malts with some ’chocolateness’, metallic ’sound’, fluffy and thick, but not too oily mouthfeel, finish of leafy hop bitterishness, lingering caramelly maltiness and some gentle roasted bitterness, but not too coffee-like. Body could be thicker, or at least more ’fatty’. Ordinary, acceptable dry stout, with indeed a creamy feel to it but scoring a bit (too) low in the roasted bitterness department; nothing bafflingly complex, but apart from the metallic taste there is nothing wrong with this. Straightforward but still enjoyable - though I am wondering if in this particular substyle, you would not be better off with a plain old Guinness Draught...

Poured into a perfect pint. 3.25 A: Black color. Two fingers of frothy tan head. Retention is about average and just a whisp of lacing is left. 3.25 S: The nose is subtle on this one. Moderate roastiness, light chocolate and caramel, and a touch of tangy lactose. Hints of coffee underneath. 3.5 T: The taste has a lot more power. Moderate roastiness with chocolate and caramel. Decidedly grainy maltiness and some mineral. 3.75 M: Medium body. Thick, starchy chewiness. Good moderate carbonation with a light creaminess. 3.5 D: Good beer, but I rather like St. P’s other offerings more. DavoleBomb, May 30, 2013

BOTTLE 50 CL. The aroma is disappointing: instead of black chocolate or roast, you get some dirty sweetness of a crappy yeasty dark lager. The flavour is better - (still simple) chocolate sweetness and tannic slightly acid vinous notes to balance (though, the balance remains on the sweeter side). Some charcoal ashy notes, as well as some salt in the finish. Noble chocolate notes, good coffee, dark bread crust are nowhere to be found. Good, but somewhat disappointing.

Nice light head A: Dont even need to be close to the glass to smell the flavours. If blinded, I'm not sure I would have guessed for Stout...? Still some of the coffee in there, toffee and some berries. T: Tobacco, cedar, plum.

Flaska systembolaget. Svartbrun kulör. Rostad doft med choklad, kaffe, vörtbröd och torkad frukt. Maltig och lite gräddig smak. Bröd och choklad. Relativt tunn i mun med trevligt len beska.

Pour from bottle in Killeen Texas. Smooth with a slightly bitter follow. Modest yet lasting chestnut head. Nice beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Fast schwarz, dunkelrote Reflexe. Viel kurzer beiger Schaum. Nur wenig Aromen röst und dunkle Schoggi. Malzig-süss und vollmundig, wenig Co2. Erst im Abgang leicht bitter. Recht gut.
