A classic example of a beer mild in hops but not in flavour. Sweetness balanced by bitter chocolate malt to produce a rare but much sought after traditional mild.

Cask pour at Jerusalem Tavern, London. Nice rustic-looking pour, a ruddy reddish-brown with a thinnish carbonation. Nose of soft biscuity malts on the nose, a trace of wood, a dollop of hops. Body is nicely full, substantial. A bit more of a bitterness emerges in the taste, but there’s certainly a greater emphasis on nutella-type flavors than anything else. Solid stuff, a winning quaffer.

Non trovo un momento per non berla, sempre appagante e non invasiva urla alla rivoluzione proletaria dei malti contro l’impero capitalista dei luppoli!

Light haze on the darkish brown beer. Crispy palate. Small off white head. Nice dark brown malts with a trace of smoke. A little cream. Mild balancing bitterness in the 2nd half. Minerally crispy finish.

Aroma di caffè e un lieve sentore di luppolo. Scura con riflessi rubino e poca schiuma. Al palato poco corposa con note di caffè, note di pistacchio nell’intermezzo e note erbacee alla fine. Un gradevole mild.

(bottle) Clear reddish dark brown with huge off-white head. Aroma of burnt toffee and dark chocolate. Medium body, overly fizzy on pour but moderately carbonated to drink. Flavour profile varies little from start to finish and is dominated by a rather harsh burnt toffee / dark roast malt taste. There are some balancing sweeter notes. Overall rather one dimensional and a bit harsh.

Grima (1855) - Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, GERMANY - SEP 26, 2012
The beer in the glass is very dark brown and ruby red. The flat foam disappears very quickly. It smells fruity, malty, roasty, with plenty of licorice and plum. Starts very strong malty-bitter and roasty, with some chocolate and licorice in the background. In the middle part, the beer is slight watery, it is malty and roasty, bitter and slightly chocolaty. Goes into a very roasty-bitter finish with licorice and bitter dark chocolate.
