patrick767 (2016), fort wayne, Indiana, USA Aug 16, 2007 bottle - Pours dark brown with a thin head. The aroma is roast malt and chocolate. The very enjoyable flavor follows suit, featuring lots of roast malt, a good chocolate accent, and mild hops that shows up mostly in the lingering finish. I think it could be rated a bit higher on average, but it looks like their choice of bottles is sometimes leading to skunked beer. That’s too bad. Mine was fine and it’s a very good porter. trickyspaniard (3), Ohio, USA does not count Aug 10, 2007 Deep, dark color like oil. Think 2-3 finger head with some lacing. As I drink more I see a deep, ruby red color on the sides. One of the sweeter porters I’ve had, but a good bitter aftertaste. Not as smooth as some others, but interesting flavors from the blend of beers.
Cool bottle with a great appearance, nose, palate, and good (not exceptional) flavor. Would definitely buy again. AndrewC (70), Canterbury, Kent, England Aug 4, 2007 500ml Bottle. Faint smell of silage. Tasted of freeze-dried coffee and roasted malt with a hint of double cream. Leafy hops and roasted coffee malt on the finish. The texture was of frothy warm ice cream. colts9016 (198), Idaho, USA Aug 3, 2007 The color is like motor oil. Chocolate, coffee, malt and a hint of floral is what I could pick up. Very thick body bitter finish and smooth mouth feel. The Beer taste like chocolate, coofee toasted malts. a hint of molasses and bit piney and earthy. overall a good stout.. thebeertourist (2751), Oslo, Norway Jul 31, 2007 Bottle at Jerusalem Tavern London. Dark brown with a red glare, beige creamy head. Lots of chocolate aroma, hints of vanilla. Good roasted flavours, bitter chocolate, dry finish. Medium body and carbonation. A great beer, no doubt. blklab2007 (938), Connecticut, USA Jul 27, 2007 500ml bottle, pours a nutty brown in color when held to the light, little carbination and at first looks not quite a porter. smell is malts, chocolate, coffee, although there is nothing too terribly interesting here. much better mouth feel than anticipated, roasted coffee flavors, slight acidic bitterness, quite creamy for the look. I think this will be better as it warms a bit, but not as bad as i was set up for, still a little watery for my tastes but an ok. beer. Strykzone (1459), Wood River, Illinois, USA Jul 25, 2007 Distinctive medicine style bottle. More amber in color than most porters. Head is a soapy tan with plenty of retention. Aroma is a delightful dark fruit. Plums and raisins abound and a hint of smoke is an undertone. Flavor is more tart than expected and plenty smoky. It is a sweet beer, though, and the malt takes some different turns. Interestingly, the malt flavor that is most common appears while licking the lips after a drink. Dark fruit can be found but it is underneath. Chocolate and coffee are also found. More of the dark fruit makes its way to the taste buds late in the glass. Mostly this porter has a smoky tart flavor and a little less hops would be an improvement. It is an interesting beer to rate in that I really like everything about it except the flavor. The flavor is good but after the other categories it is a disappointment. flowerysong (25), USA Jul 24, 2007 Appearance: Pours a clear dark mahogany. Tan head, two fingers, with good retention.
Smell: Roasted malt, dark chocolate, yeast and lemony hops.
Taste: Rich malt flavour with cocoa and coffee notes. Light hops are just right to balance the flavour; some caramel sweetness up front. Dry, earthy finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, medium carbonation. Initial creaminess gives way to a mildly bitter bite.
Drinkability: High. Well-structured, lots of complexity, very solid example of the style.
