Aroma is surprisingly indistinct, almost nonexistent: a bit of roasted malt, like one would expect, but not much else comes through. Taste comes with an overarching nutty-malt character that is laid over by roast and chocolate...finish is strongly bitter chocolate. Little to no hop character whatsoever. Watery on the tongue. Certainly not a superb porter by any means. themadmumis (344), Westminster, Maryland, USA

Not complex in taste, not distinctive and not up to the St.Peters name. Find better elsewhere; i.e. samuel smith. Worth a once over, but be prepared. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 4, 2006 Poured a deep brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma was sweet, not enough smoky, coffee smell for me. Flavor was also too sweet with a bit of roasted malt, but brown sugar dominates. Watery mouthfeel. Not all that impressive for what I paid for the bottle. Stine (1380), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA

Some bready malts. Flavor reminds me of burnt venison - wood and ashes. Rather limp mouthfeel leaves a little bitter coffee in the mouth, but not much else. Not quite insubstantial, but close. kseecs16 (873), Naperville, Illinois, USA

Nice roast smoky malty and dark chocolate aroma. Very dry toasty flavor and a potent malt body. A little thin on the tongue, but smooth with a nice lingering taste. Dark brown with small/no head with a few large bubbles. Smoke aroma, crisp palate. Flavor is a bit sharp – perhaps this beer is a touch to young, or overhopped for the style.
