jbrus (4835), Delft, Netherlands Feb 5, 2006 Bottled. Very strong aroma of coffee, licorice and black currant. Ruby color, light brown head, very nice lace. Strong flavors as well, licorice, roasted, bitter, coffee finish, long lasting bitterness in the finish. Light body, bit sandy. gilvanblight (390), Windsor, Ontario, Canada Feb 1, 2006 Really nice dark pour with a thick head that faded quickly. Earthy chocolat smell. Bitter thick taste. Worst problem is a bitter aftertaste that just won’t go away when done. Pinnhead (93), New Jersey, USA Jan 28, 2006 watery. pours slightly opaque, unimpressive. to me body was meager and flavor lacking, no depth. jimcook (14), Cathedral City, California, USA Jan 28, 2006 Love the bottle! Looks like an old medicine bottle. Although I would like to see a stronger head, it’s got a nice slightly-translucent color. Very nice non-burnt coffee flavor, with more effervescence than I would have thought by looking at the head. Overall, an excellent beer. TheBeerLover (1019), DC Metro Area, USA Jan 28, 2006 . "Old Style" is a very apt descriptor, as this beer is not brewed as a porter, per say. Porter originally was a blend of two or three different beers, often referred to as Three Threads or Entire, and St Peter’s Old Style Porter is just that, a blend of an older mature ale, and a lighter ale.
St Peter’s Old Style Porter pours to a deep caramel/light brown color with a slight tan head that fades, and a soft carbonation. The nose is lightly malty with aromas of pale malt, a touch of chocolate malt, and a slight hint of roast. The palate is soft with flavors of pale and biscuit malt, and hints of chocolate malt flavor. There is light touches of yeasty/estery fruit flavors on the palate as well. This beer finishes biscuity up front, then is balanced with a slight, herbal hop bitterness.
This is a very well done old style porter, and I imagine this is what porter really tasted like centuries ago when it was a blend of two different beers. This beer tasted very fresh, and its soft maltiness and body made it a very quaffable pint. St Peter’s markets their bottled beers in a very unique green flask like bottle that is very appealing. This is a great session brew, I could see myself drinking a lot of this beer. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA Jan 22, 2006 Dark transparent mahogany, off white film for head. Aroma and flavor are very weak coffee through and through. Not much else going on whatsoever. SSSteve (2049), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jan 21, 2006 clear brown ruby color. no head. excellent chocolate coffee aroma. dry palate. chocolate and coffee in flavor as well. not too sweet not too bitter. great stuff. FoolishMortal (965), San Diego, California, USA Jan 19, 2006 500mL bottle. Dark red-brown with a thin film of dark tan head. Chocolate, caramel, apple-skin aromatics.
