oldrtybastrd (1801), Morlautern, Germany/Great Falls, Montana, USA Jan 6, 2006 From dhrjericho. Pours a deep dark brown color. Aromas of chocolate, dark fruits. Flavor is big chocolate, a touch of coffee. Medium body witha creamy feel. Bittersweet chocolate finish and aftertaste. Like a tootsie roll. ehhdayton (1113), USA Jan 3, 2006 There is a chocolate aroma and a deep rich black appearance but very little head. The taste has a roasted chocolate overtone but the finish on the palate is both weak and watery. highlandlad (1258), Sydney, Australia Jan 3, 2006 A smooth, unremarkable English porter. Poured a clear dark brown with no head at all. Not a sausage. The aroma reminded me a bit of the Wentworth Oatmeal Stout earlier in the same tasting - lots of fusel alcohols, charcoal, bitter chocolate. Thin to medium body. Very smooth, sweetish flavour profile - sweet dark chocolate. No rough edges to this one. (Bottle, RateBeer Sydney Xmas gathering 2005) dwyerpg (2519), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jan 2, 2006 Suprisingly no head at all. This is really pretty good. Sweet but dry and odd-flavored at the finish. I don’ know what makes this old-style, other than it does have a slightly oldtaste to it (in a good way), but it makes it a pretty good porter to me. JohnnyOS (646), Golden, Wisconsin, USA Dec 30, 2005 Pours a deep dark brown with a nice tan head that diminishes quickly. Aroma of malt with faint chocolate and a dash of hops. The body is very light with slight carbonation only detectable at the finish. Subtle flavors of hops, malt, coffee and dark chocolate.
Good. FistFullOfCats (162), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Dec 28, 2005 Bottle. Pours dark but clear coffee brown with a very small tan head. Aroma of weak coffee, alcohol, light hops. Flavor of weak coffee, super faint chocolate note, not at all bitter hops. Flavor is super light. Finishes with a little bit of coffee and hop bitterness, but that’s about it. Body is real weak; water thin with not even a little bit of carbonation, which in this case makes it feel totally lifeless. Well, this is ok. Maybe it is traditional, with is cool for educational purposes if nothing else. bluevegie (2169), Perth, Australia Dec 26, 2005 Medium size head with big bubbles, light tan in colour, deep ruby in body that looks like black from a distance. Some solid rings of lacing with specks filling the gaps in between. Good malt on the nose, lightly toasted also some milk. Taste is not quite up to the appearance or the aroma but not that far behind. Pleasant tar bitterness, meaty broth, coffee and hints of liquorice. Quite liked this porter! DuffMan (2723), the land of bitumen, beef & beer, Alberta, Canada Dec 21, 2005 Dark brown, clear, thin tan head. Coffee, raisins, woodsmoke, and cedar. Rich chocolate, coffee, prunes, brown sugar, and ash. Perfectly balanced-- loved it!
