badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Aug 29, 2005 pours dark with no head...aroma is a bit tart, with the usual hints of chocolate and coffee.....flavor is a very roasted, smoky chocolate, with a touch of vanilla...palate is a tad thin, but not bad andershn (90), Copenhagen, Denmark Aug 25, 2005 50 cL bottle. Smooth, tan head dissipating too fast. Pleasant sweet and sour aroma with chocolate and smoke. Flavour a bit thin but pleasant with chocolate, caramel and licorice; some sourness. Long bitter aftertaste. Very smooth and oily mouthfeel. Good but nothing special. TChrome (1298), Bedford, Texas, USA Aug 17, 2005 Very attractive appearing beer, pouring very dark brown with a nice thick, fully retained, creamy, dark tan colored head. Aroma follows the appearance with a bouquet of dark chocolate, and some peaty, smokiness. Flavor is likewise smokey and chocolaty with a surprising amount of dry, hop bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is creamy and oily. This is the kind of porter I really like!! DrBeer (777), Danderyd Stockholm, Sweden Aug 17, 2005 Brown-red with small white head.
Fruity aroma with notes of chocolate, cream, coffee, licorice, malt, gravy, wood and some acidity. Roasted and smooth.
Creamy flavor with notes of coffee, chocolate, fruit, licorice and nuts. Velvety smooth and oily with salty notes. Build-up bitterness. mrnutsnbolts (204), Berkeley, California, USA Aug 14, 2005 Bottle. Smells raisiny and chocolatey. Pours a reddish brow with a very minimal head. Tart and light flavor with some chocolate. Decent porter, but not enough body or substance tourette (186), San Francisco, California, USA Aug 12, 2005 I like this one rather more than St. Peter’s stout. True to style, its a little lighter and smoother. But it also lacks the strange off notes that the stout has. More of a chocolate and dried fruit taste. More complex then the stout as well, in my opinion. I keep coming back to this one. hopdog (5535), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 8, 2005 Bottle acquired in trade with beerhugger (thanks!). Poured a dark reddish-brown with almost no head. Aromas of very faint chocolate and light caramel. Very sour tasting. I had to take a second sip to see if my mind was playing tricks on me. Same. I’ll have to assume this one was a bad bottle. I’ll rate as is and one day may get another bottle... walter (359), Staunton, Virginia, USA Aug 3, 2005 Bottle (dig the flask!). Pours a rich, dark brown, darker than the green bottle made it look. Lots of dark malts and roasted aromas-- toffee, caramel, toast, coffee, roast, etc. Also various fruit aromas arise as the beer warms-- raisins, prunes, plums. Medium body. Fruits come across first in the flavor, followed by a sweet, round malt middle, and finishing with a pleasant, almost unexpected, hop bitterness. Slight bittersweet tacky aftertaste/texture. Pleasant bubbly mouthfeel. Very enjoyable.
