Retorp (2154), Tampa, Florida, USA Oct 26, 2004 Dark Brown pour from a very cool Victorian looking medicine bottle. Toasted malt aroma, but very light and you really have to breathe deep to smell it. Bitterness is very present. Only mildly toasted flavors of coffee and choclate. Has a sassafrass sweetness initially, but the bitter dominates. eraserhd10 (226), new haven, Connecticut, USA Oct 26, 2004 A delicious, aged, smoky porter. Great looking bottle. Classy. Not overtly sweet. Suprisingly smooth. Perfectly bitter! Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Oct 22, 2004 Deep translucent red-brown body, tiny light tan head. Aroma is a strange mix of toasted black malts and barley sugars/cereals (it reminds me of a non-alcoholic malt soda). The flavor is surprisingly sour and tangy with sharp malt sugars and light roasted notes leading to a distinctly woody, bitter finish. Somewhat sweet. Decidedly British and not bad! skortila (2875), Bunnik, Netherlands Oct 20, 2004 In my opinion, this porter is much underrated. It’s a perfectly balanced porter. Well okay it is lacking a little complexness. Aroma is malty (roasted, coffee/chocolate). Hazy, brown-black coloured with a lasting brown, thin head. Taste is malty (roasted, coffee/some chocolate). Initially sweet. Quite bitter towards the finish. A bit a mixture between sticky and dry. Lekker! Dalle (1146), Skørping, Denmark Oct 16, 2004 Bottle. Near black with small head. Coffee, liqoruice root, tobacco and especially smoked malt. Medium body. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Oct 14, 2004 (16.9 oz bottle, $4) This is my second try with this beer, as the first attempt a year and a half ago was extremely sour in the nose and flavor, and clearly a bad bottle, so let’s try this again; The nose here smells lightly roasted, malty, slightly hoppy, but the key here is that it doesn’t smell sour, so yippee!!! And nope, the flavor isn’t sour either; It’s dark roasted, almost burnt, and fairly bitter, with very little sweetness to it; The moderate smokiness easily jumps into prominence in the finish; The fairly dry palate is very thin and rather watery, very lightly carbonated, but with a somewhat soft mouthfeel; Medium brown color is lighter than most porters; I tried to pour a head on this beer, but the best I could get was some large bubbles, and I’m left with a sheen within a few minutes; Despite the lack of head, those few bubbles actually produce some sporadic lacing duff (5474), Surrey, Greater London, England Oct 14, 2004 Bottle. Pretty decent stuff. Nice soft almost oaty mouthfeel. Licorice and chocolate and of course roasted malt, soft, smooth, with some decent bitterness and som elight acidity. Pleasant porter. Kevin (1917), Colorado, USA Oct 13, 2004 bottle. pours a brownish black with a tan head. semi sweet aroma that is nice. flavor is fruity and roasted. nice sour finish. this is the first beer with this blance of flavors i’ve had. not, bad, my buddy thought it was too sour, but i like it.
