Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available brewery conditioned and cold filtered in 500ml bottles.
This fine beer is a blend of a mature old ale with a younger light beer - just as a true Porter should be. The marriage produces an extremely characterful brew which is dark in colour and complex in taste.

Bottle. Acrid taste with notes of grass and sourness. A little too sour for me.

Creamy, nutty, chocolatey aroma. Nice dark brown color with a light brown head. Nice mocha flavor, and like the aroma, there are hints of chocolate. The palate is somewhat thick and grainy feeling with a little bit of carbonation and a bitter aftertaste. Quite an enjoyable beer.

Pours brown, actually looks like Coke. The head quickly disappears. Aroma is mostly burnt malt, with some tobacco and nuts as well. Body is light and the taste is rather dry. Tastes include burnt malt, smoke and coffee. The burnt taste overwhelms both the aroma and taste.

16.9 fl. oz./ 500 ml. green bottle. Shaped like an old time patent elixer medicine bottle. No freshness date seen, but a cryptic code seen on back label. Poured out a dark chocolate brown, with red highlights barely escaping the edges. Thin, soapy white head collapsed quickly, leaving a thin, soapy film on top of the beer. A little lacing along the sides of the glass. Aromas are of old dank, musty basement, oak barrel, pipe tobacco, subdued roastiness, some nuttiness also. Tastes are of mild malts, weak roastiness, and burnt sugar. Mouthfeel is weak bodied, and thin. No hops aromas, but a very slight bitterness, probably more from the malts than the hops. Not the best English beer I ever had. It needs more flavor, and more body.

Colour is black with a hint of brown-red. The foam is light brown with small bubbles, and it is fast dissolving. The smell is full of roasted malt, black coffee, cocoa and some bitter hops. The carbon dioxide is gentle, yet refreshing with very small bubbles. The taste is relatively mild and dry with a strong note of black coffee. At first, there is a rush of bitterness, and then a more balanced taste emerges with a taste of burned malt, coffee and cocoa. Conclusion: A well-crafted, dry porter.

A Stygian hued brew, with a short, but sweet, cream-colored head. Aroma is a delicious jolt of cocoa and coffee. I should put my face in this beer’s nose every morning, in lieu of my regular pot of java! Other flavors add to the complex profile: molasses, dark rum, a hint of anise. Much more headiness in aroma than the typical porter. How does it taste? Rich, deep, full of texture. Surprisingly less bitter on palate than I’d expect from so dark an aroma. Very smooth. Full malt, just-right hops. This brew is a meal unto itself. Texture got a little thin at the end, don’t know what happened there. But I liked it, I really liked it. Felt much different from the normal porter, or even the above average porter.

Sampled at Brew Ha Ha 2004. Dark ruby red with a very small head. Hoppy, somewhat smoky aroma. Chocolate malts battle it out with oily hops in the flavor. Decent, but not fantastic by any means.

Bottle. Dark brown see through color. Small but pretty and soapy head. Aroma is serious chocolate. Flavor is chocolate and coffee, but not as strong as the aroma would suggest. It actually has a rather light palate. Fairly dry at the end, but not overly so. Fairly good. I am impressed with the cask conditioning.
